Beach Park, IL. – Today, small business owner and community advocate Lucilia (Lucy) Rios announced her candidacy for Lake County Board District 2, which comprises parts of Zion, Beach Park, Wadsworth, Waukegan and Gurnee.
“Our community needs a real champion,” said Rios. “We need someone who will empower people by fighting for a better economy. We need someone who will hold our government accountable to all our residents, whether it is demanding fiscal responsibility or providing the services we deserve. I will be that champion.”
Rios was inspired to run because, like many residents of District 2, she felt real change was needed in her government.
“I am tired of career politicians who take the most from us in taxes, but give the least back to us in services,” said Rios. “We can do better. I will put people first, just like I have all my life.”
Rios began her career in the public health field working to empower women who contracted HIV. A single mother of five working two jobs to make ends meet, Rios aspired to provide a quality life for her family while simultaneously helping people. Eventually she was able to build her own business, Lucy’s Home Care Express Inc., which provides non-medical home care services for seniors.
While working to realize her dreams for her family, Rios found time to give back to her community. She co-founded the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the Latino Coalition of Lake County, and eventually became the first Hispanic woman to ever be elected Waukegan Township Trustee. She has received the “Latina Leadership Award” from Governor Jim Edgar and was named a “Woman of Achievement” by the Lake County YWCA.
“I want to create a better life for our community, just like I did for my family,” said Rios. “We need to make health care more accessible for everyone. We need to bring more jobs to the district, and do a better job providing assistance to families. These are all things that can be done with hard work and dedication.”
Rios is a proud resident of Waukegan, where she has lived for 37 years. She has five children, thirteen grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
