Waukegan, IL. – El juez principal Mark L. Levitt fue notificado por Marcia M. Meis, directora de la Oficina Administrativa de los Tribunales de Illinois, que los 23 jueces asociados que presentaron solicitudes de reelección en sus cargos por un nuevo período de cuatro años han sido retenidos.
El nuevo mandato de cada juez asociado ratificado comenzará el 1 de julio de 2023 y finalizará el 30 de junio de 2027. Los dos jueces asociados más nuevos del Decimonoveno Circuito Judicial, Ruth H. Lofthouse y James R.M. Newman, no estaban obligados a solicitar la retención, ya que prestaron juramento el 3 de abril de 2023.
De conformidad con la Constitución de Illinois, los jueces asociados cumplen un mandato de cuatro años. La Constitución de Illinois confiere a la Corte Suprema de Illinois la autoridad para proporcionar, por regla, el proceso de nombramiento de los jueces asociados en Illinois.
Con la adopción de la Regla 39 de la Corte Suprema en 1971, la elección cuatrienal de nuevos nombramientos de jueces asociados se logra mediante la emisión de votos por parte de jueces de tribunales de circuito elegibles para votar.

23 associate judges reappointed
Chief Judge Mark L. Levitt was notified by Marcia M. Meis, Director of the Administrative Office of the Illinois Courts, that all 23 associate judges that filed requests for reappointment to their offices for a new four-year term have been retained.
The new term of office for each reappointed associate judge will begin on July 1, 2023, and terminate on June 30, 2027. The Nineteenth Judicial Circuit’s two newest associate judges, Ruth H. Lofthouse, and James R.M. Newman, were not required to apply for retention, as they took their Oaths of Office on April 3, 2023.
Pursuant to the Illinois Constitution, associate judges serve a four-year term of office. The Illinois Constitution vests in the Illinois Supreme Court the authority to provide, by rule, for the associate judges’ appointment process in Illinois.
With the adoption of Supreme Court Rule 39 in 1971, the quadrennial reappointment election of associate judges is accomplished through casting ballots by circuit court judges eligible to vote. The Administrative Office of the Illinois Courts administers all associate judge elections on behalf of the Supreme Court.
The 2023 quadrennial reappointment election is the thirteenth reappointment election since the 1970 amendment to the judicial article of the Illinois Constitution.
