Tucson, AZ. – U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers conducting outbound enforcement operations at the Area Port of Douglas, Ariz., seized weapons and rounds of ammunition from a U.S. citizen attempting to depart the United States.
On Feb.15, officers at the Raul H. Castro Port of Entry in Douglas referred a 24-year-old, male U.S. citizen driving a Dodge Ram 1500 van for additional inspection as he attempted to enter Mexico through the port. During the search, CBP officers discovered several packages inside the vehicle containing seven AK-47 rifles and 11,000 rounds of ammunition.
Officers seized the weapons and vehicle. The driver was arrested and turned over to Homeland Security Investigations. Federal law allows officers to charge individuals by complaint, a method that permits the filing of charges for criminal activity without inferring guilt. Individuals are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
CBP officers screen all people, vehicles and goods entering the United States while facilitating the flow of legitimate trade and travel. Their mission includes weapons and narcotics interdiction, enforcing immigration and trade laws, and protecting the nation’s food supply and agriculture industry from pests and diseases.
