Waukegan, IL. – Anuncia la Oficina del Fiscal del Estado del Condado de Lake, junto con funcionarios estatales y locales, el equipo de liderazgo de la Iniciativa de Prevención de la Violencia Armada (GVPI, por sus siglas en inglés).
La Iniciativa se asociará con la comunidad y las fuerzas del orden público para abordar las causas fundamentales de la violencia armada e implementar estrategias comprobadas a corto y largo plazo para interrumpir de inmediato los ciclos de violencia armada.
Para ayudar a presentar la nueva iniciativa en una conferencia de prensa, el fiscal estatal Eric Rinehart estuvo acompañado por el congresista Brad Schneider; la representante estatal Rita Mayfield; la senadora estatal Adriane Johnson; la secretaria adjunta del IDHS y la Oficina de Prevención de la Violencia con Armas de Fuego, Chris Patterson; Marcus McAllister, MC&T LLC, Dr. Vernice Wright y otros líderes comunitarios.
“La violencia armada no solo está afectando a nuestra nación en las escuelas, los cines y las tiendas de comestibles debido al acceso casi ilimitado a las armas legales. También se está convirtiendo, a diario, en una herramienta para resolver disputas en las redes sociales o para tomar represalias por tiroteos anteriores”, dijo el fiscal estatal Eric Rinehart.
Esta iniciativa fue posible gracias a la inversión sustancial de la Junta del Condado de Lake a través de fondos ARPA y el Estado de Illinois a través de la asignación presupuestaria. Los $1.06 millones le darán a la Oficina del Fiscal del Estado del Condado de Lake la capacidad de ayudar a una organización comunitaria a contratar y administrar un equipo de al menos 10 interruptores de violencia en el Condado de Lake para ayudar a frenar la creciente violencia callejera en Waukegan, North Chicago y Zion.
La iniciativa contará con la ayuda de Marcus McAllister, un capacitador de renombre nacional, proveedor de asistencia técnica y residente del condado de Lake. McAllister ha estado involucrado en muchos programas de interrupción de la violencia durante casi 20 años. Ha entrenado interruptores en todo el país y el mundo.
Los asesinatos y tiroteos han ido en aumento en el condado de Lake. En 2021, vimos 21 homicidios relacionados con la violencia armada y 28 suicidios con armas de fuego. Este es el más alto jamás registrado en ambas categorías para nuestro condado.
Las organizaciones comunitarias podrán presentar solicitudes para recibir fondos a partir de la próxima semana. Durante los primeros dos años en los que la iniciativa contará con personal, se buscarán fondos adicionales a través de subvenciones estatales, federales y privadas para sostener el programa y reducir la violencia armada a largo plazo.

Fight against gun violence
On Friday, June 3, 2022, the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office, along with other state and local officials, announced the leadership team of the Gun Violence Prevention Initiative (GVPI).
The Lake County Gun Violence Prevention Initiative will partner with community and law enforcement to address the root causes of gun violence, and implement proven short-term and long-term strategies, to immediately interrupt cycles of gun violence.
To help introduce the new initiative at a press conference, State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart was joined by Congressman Brad Schneider, State Representative Rita Mayfield, State Senator Adriane Johnson, IDHS Assistant Secretary and Office of Firearm Violence Prevention Chris Patterson, Marcus McAllister, MC&T LLC, Dr. Vernice Wright, and other community leaders.
“Gun violence is not only ripping at our nation in schools, movie theaters, and grocery stores due to near unfettered access to legal weapons. It is also, on a daily basis, becoming a tool to settle social media disputes or to retaliate for past shootings,” said State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart.
This initiative was possible with the substantial investment by the Lake County Board through ARPA funds and the State of Illinois through budget allocation. The $1.06 million will give the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office the ability to help a community-based organization hire and manage a team of at least 10 violence interrupters in Lake County to help curb the rising street violence in Waukegan, North Chicago, and Zion.
The Initiative will be aided by Marcus McAllister, a nationally renowned trainer, technical assistance provider, and Lake County resident. McAllister has been involved with many violence interrupter programs for nearly 20 years. He has trained interrupters throughout the country and the world.
Murders and shootings have been on the rise in Lake County. In 2021, we saw 21-gun violence related homicides and 28 suicides by firearm. This is the highest ever recorded in both categories for our County.
Community-based organizations will be able to submit applications to receive funding starting early next week. During the first two years in which the initiative will be staffed, additional funding will be sought through state, federal, and private grants in order to sustain the program and reduce gun violence in the long run.
