Waukegan, IL. – Some Jefferson Middle School students are acquiring transitional life skills through their school-wide recycling program.
Since the start of the school year, Students in Ms. Elizabeth Yount’s Autism Program classrooms spend time once a week honing their work and social skills by visiting classrooms throughout the school and collecting their recycling items.
While this is the first year the program has been in place at Jefferson, Ms. Yount spent four years developing the program at Miguel Juarez Middle School, and has been thrilled with the growth she’s seen from her students at both schools.
“I’ve definitely seen communication skills starting progressing, students who wouldn’t make eye contact have starting looking up before asking question,” said Ms. Yount, “I’ve also seen a huge growth in reciprocating in conversations, as well as body language and confidence.”
In addition to the transitional skills, Ms. Yount says the weekly recycling service has helped enhance the relationship with the schools general population.
