Dear Waukegan Community,
I am writing to express my disappointment related to the string of threats made toward our schools on social media in recent days.
Incidents like these incite panic not only within the school environment, but with the community at large. The violent nature of these threats create an atmosphere of chaos and fear amongst students, staff and parents. Additionally, these incidents are an enormous distraction that take valuable time and resources from school and law enforcement officials.
We know these types of online threats are not new. As the internet and social media has evolved we, along with districts across the country, have seen an increase in threats of this nature. I would like to make it very clear, however, that our school district does not take these threats lightly. We will not tolerate this kind of behavior, and will continue to treat and investigate each incident with the utmost seriousness.
Any student found to be making these threats, or participating in the creation of these threats, will face the harshest consequences in accordance with District policy. Additionally, we will assist law enforcement in pursuing criminal charges against those involved.
We would like to remind students that if they become aware of a threat, they should immediately contact a parent, teacher, staff member, safety officer, SRO, principal or other trusted adult. We also encourage students to utilize our anonymous tip-line by calling 224-303-1166 or visiting your school’s or the district’s website. We all play a vital role in working to keep our schools safe.
While the incidents of the last few days did pose some unique situations for our school buildings, I want to thank our school staff and local law enforcement for their quick response to these threats. I would also like to thank parents for their patience and understanding during these events. We know that these threats carry many unknowns and are frightening, but we want to reiterate that each threat reported to us will be investigated immediately, and safety precautions will be taken as we determine the validity of each threat.
We also ask that parents assist us in curbing the frequency of these threats by regularly monitoring your child’s activity online, as well as ensuring they understand the seriousness and the consequence of making threats of this nature.
In closing, I want to assure our parents, staff and students that we as a school district are constantly enforcing and reevaluating our safety protocols, and the safety of our students and staff remains a top priority.

Escribo para expresar mi desilusión relacionada con la serie de amenazas hechas a nuestras escuelas en las redes sociales en los últimos días.
Incidentes como estos incitan al pánico no solo dentro del entorno escolar, sino también con la comunidad en general. La naturaleza violenta de estas amenazas crea una atmósfera de caos y miedo entre los estudiantes, el personal y los padres. Además, estos incidentes son una enorme distracción que requiere tiempo y recursos valiosos de los funcionarios de la escuela y la policía.
Sabemos que este tipo de amenazas en línea no son nuevas. A medida que Internet y las redes sociales han evolucionado, nosotros, junto con los distritos de todo el país, hemos visto un aumento en las amenazas de esta naturaleza. Sin embargo, me gustaría dejar muy en claro que nuestro distrito escolar no toma estas amenazas a la ligera. No toleraremos este tipo de comportamiento, y continuaremos tratando e investigando cada incidente con la mayor seriedad.
Cualquier estudiante que se encuentre haciendo estas amenazas, o participando en la creación de estas amenazas, enfrentará las consecuencias más severas de acuerdo con la política del Distrito. Además, ayudaremos a la policía a presentar cargos penales contra los involucrados.
Nos gustaría recordarles a los estudiantes que si se dan cuenta de una amenaza, deben comunicarse de inmediato con un padre, maestro, miembro del personal, oficial de seguridad, SRO, director u otro adulto de confianza. También alentamos a los estudiantes a utilizar nuestra línea de información anónima llamando al 224-303-1166 o visitando el sitio web de su escuela o del distrito. Todos jugamos un papel vital en el trabajo para mantener seguras nuestras escuelas.
Si bien los incidentes de los últimos días plantearon algunas situaciones únicas para nuestros edificios escolares, quiero agradecer a nuestro personal escolar y la policía local por su rápida respuesta a estas amenazas. También me gustaría agradecer a los padres por su paciencia y comprensión durante estos eventos. Sabemos que estas amenazas conllevan muchas incógnitas y son aterradoras, pero queremos reiterar que cada amenaza que se nos informe será investigada de inmediato, y se tomarán precauciones de seguridad a medida que determinemos la validez de cada amenaza.
También les pedimos a los padres que nos ayuden a frenar la frecuencia de estas amenazas al monitorear regularmente la actividad de su hijo en línea, así como también a garantizar que comprendan la gravedad y la consecuencia de hacer amenazas de esta naturaleza.
Para finalizar, quiero asegurarles a nuestros padres, personal y estudiantes que nosotros, como distrito escolar, estamos haciendo cumplir y reevaluando constantemente nuestros protocolos de seguridad, y que la seguridad de nuestros estudiantes y personal sigue siendo una prioridad.
