Teniendo como marco la conmemoración de Juneteenth, Waukegan Township, dirigido por el supervisor Marc Jones, tuvo a bien llevar a cabo una mesa de diálogo entre hombres afroamericanos e hispanos de la localidad que se enfocan en ayudar a la comunidad en distintas áreas, desde deportes hasta educación en distintas formas.
Los panelistas, todos conocidos y buen ejemplo a seguir, Brandon Ewing, presidente de la Junta Escolar del Distrito Escolar 60 de Waukegan y facilitador del evento; Elvis Tillett, asistente de programas de Boys and Girls Club de Lake County; Ángel López, presidente de Angel’s Boxing Academy; Andrew Gadsden, Co-Fundador del Programa Yoked Mentorship; Fred Long de UCAN Chicago; Rodolfo Ruiz-Velasco, coordinador de Estudiantes Latinos de CLC y Wayne Cook, coach y mentor del Distrito Escolar de Waukegan.
Ellos expusieron sus experiencias personales de superación y de cómo ayudan en la actualidad a personas que lo requieren, y al mismo tiempo son parte de la Coalición para Reducir la Reincidencia en el Condado de Lake.
Dio gusto ver este evento al que estuvo muy atento el Representante en Washington, Brad Schneider; la senadora Adriane Johnson y el mismo Marc Jones, que al final de evento agradeció a todos los presentes por la oportunidad de exponer sus experiencias a los asistentes.
Y para aquellos que aún están con la duda del significado de Juneteenth, déjenme decirles que es una fecha que representa y tiene un valor muy importante en la vida y cultura de la comunidad afroamericana de los Estados Unidos.
El 19 de junio de 1865 marca el día en que las tropas federales llegaron a Galveston, Texas, para tomar el control del estado y asegurarse de que todas las personas esclavizadas fueran liberadas. Las tropas llegaron dos años y medio después de que Abraham Lincoln emitiera la Proclamación de Emancipación. Es un día de celebración, que conmemora el fin de la esclavitud en los Estados Unidos. A partir del 16 de junio de 2021, Juneteenth es feriado federal en los Estados Unidos.

Great Waukegan Township event
With Juneteenth commemoration as its backdrop, Waukegan Township, led by Supervisor Marc Jones, was pleased to host a roundtable discussion between local African-American and Hispanic men who focus on helping the community in a variety of areas, from sports even education in different forms.
The panelists, all well-known and good role models, Brandon Ewing, president of the Waukegan School District 60 School Board and event facilitator; Elvis Tillett, program assistant for the Boys and Girls Club of Lake County; Ángel López, president of Angel’s Boxing Academy; Andrew Gadsden, Co-Founder of the Yoked Mentorship Program; Fred Long of UCAN Chicago; Rodolfo Ruiz-Velasco, CLC Latino Student Coordinator and Wayne Cook, Waukegan School District coach and mentor.
They shared their personal experiences of overcoming and how they currently help people in need, and at the same time they are part of the Coalition to Reduce Recidivism in Lake County.
It was a pleasure to see this event, to which the Representative in Washington, Brad Schneider, was very attentive; Senator Adriane Johnson and Marc Jones himself, who at the end of the event thanked all those present for the opportunity to share their experiences with those present.
And for those who are still in doubt about the meaning of Juneteenth, let me tell you that it is a date that represents and has a very important value in the life and culture of the African-American community in the United States.
June 19, 1865 marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people were freed. The troops arrived two and a half years after Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. It is a day of celebration, commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. As of June 16th, 2021, Juneteenth is a federal holiday in the United States.
