Waukegan, IL. – Astride a speeding rocket ship, his legs casually and joyfully embracing the wind and his left hand holding his book that equally embraces the wind, Ray Bradbury will evermore grace the courtyard of Waukegan Public Library, evermore inspiring the imagination of his hometown community.
“Fantastical Traveler” (sculpture) honors “a literary icon and a beloved Waukeganite who gifted us his ever expanding universe of imagination, intellect and optimism for our future,” Zachary Oxman, its sculptor said.
Thursday evening, August 22, 2019 was the official statue unveiling. The Waukegan Symphony Orchestra performed. Speakers included Capt. James Lovell, the celebrated astronaut, Dr. Eller of Indiana University, director of Ray Bradbury Studies there, and Larry Yellen, investigative reporter for Channel 32 News, who grew up in Waukegan.
All spoke eloquently, but their words about Mr. Bradbury himself were the most inspiring and uplifting to the crowd assembled.
