Inicia la petición de firmas para aparecer en las boletas electorales que formarán las elecciones consolidadas de 6 de abril de 2027 en el Condado de Lake, Illinois.
A partir del 25 de agosto de 2026, las personas interesadas en estar en dicha boleta deben caminar por sus respectivos distritos y recabar firmas para acceder al paquete de petición, para posteriormente, estar en las elecciones.
Suena fácil, pero recordemos que hay que ser muy precavidos para no sufrir la suerte del candidato de Round Lake en las pasadas elecciones para el consejo del condado que le se la hicieron de “jamón” por omitir su nombre completo.
En fin, lo que llama fuertemente el proceso electoral en esta ocasión es el interés de tres jóvenes, no cabe duda que será la sangre nueva la que marque el rumbo de la política a nivel local, quienes ya levantaron la mano para tratar de obtener un puesto en el consejo de la ciudad de Waukegan.
Estos tres jóvenes tienen las ganas de hacer el cambio para ayudar a su comunidad, pero les esperan retos, adquirir experiencia y toparse con las maquinarias políticas existentes para manipularlos.
El Distrito 1 está vacante, era Sylvia Sims Bolton, actualmente acusada de un delito grave por presuntamente votar en una elección utilizando la boleta de su madre fallecida, quien tenía años en el cargo y que ahora deja la puerta abierta para que alguien ocupe su asiento.
En este distrito, aparece la figura de Karen Hermández, una persona comprometida, dedicada y que conocemos en Puro Futbol, quien dijo “yo” y ahora está en el proceso de obtener las firmas entre sus vecinos para poder estar en la boleta y participar en el proceso, pues puede haber otro candidato que la obligue a tener una pelea reñida por el puesto.

Sentimientos encontrados
Por otra parte, lo que medio gusto y al mismo tiempo tristeza fue ver a dos jóvenes candidatos participar, pero por el mismo distrito, el quinto, tendrán que recabar sus firmas y luego eliminarse en las elecciones primarias, previas a las de abril.
Abraham Palomar y Michelle López, ambos conocidos, buenas personas, ojalá pudieran estar en distintos distritos para apoyarlos en la contienda.
Pero sus deseos son muy respetados, es de aplaudirse que tengan el valor moral y civil para ostentar un cargo público como lo es el consejo de la Ciudad de Waukegan, donde ya hay tres hispanos, José Guzmán en el Distrito 2, Juan Martínez en el 3 y Víctor Félix en el cuarto.
Y me adelanto mucho al pensar que de llegar a ganar 5 de ellos, y ya no viéndolo como un sueño guajiro, pues somos una comunidad con mayoría latina, sería la primera vez en la historia de esta ciudad en tener mayoría hispana en el consejo.
Y como dijo ‘Jack’ El Destripador; “Vámonos por partes”. Primero hay que ir por esas firmas que ocupan para poder estar en la boleta, después a motivar al “Elefante blanco” de votantes inertes para que salgan a emitir el sufragio (votar) y después ver cómo se acomodan en esas sillas que buscan.
Ya posteriormente veremos la forma en que se aplican para ayudar a su comunidad, ahí va a estar lo bueno, pues es donde se topan con las murallas ya establecidas.

It could be the Waukegan Hispanic Council.
The petition drive to secure a spot on the ballots for the April 6, 2027, consolidated elections in Lake County, Illinois, is getting underway.
Starting August 25, 2026, those interested in appearing on the ballot must canvass their respective districts to gather signatures—a necessary step to access the petition packet and ultimately qualify for the election.
It sounds easy, but one must be extremely cautious to avoid the fate of the Round Lake candidate in the last county board election, who faced serious trouble simply for omitting their full legal name.
What stands out most about this election cycle is the interest shown by three young people—undoubtedly, new blood will shape the direction of local politics. They have stepped forward seeking seats on the Waukegan City Council.
These three young individuals are eager to drive change and help their community, yet challenges lie ahead: gaining experience and contending with established political machines that may try to manipulate them.
District 1 is vacant; the seat was previously held by Sylvia Sims Bolton—who served for years but has now left the position open. Bolton currently faces felony charges for allegedly voting using her deceased mother’s ballot.
Karen Hernandez has emerged as a candidate in this district. A committed and dedicated individual known to us at Puro Futbol, she has stepped up and is currently gathering signatures from neighbors to qualify for the ballot. She may face a tough, competitive race if another candidate enters the fray.

Mixed feelings
On the other hand, it was a bittersweet experience to see two young candidates running in the same district—the Fifth. They will both have to gather signatures and then face off against each other in the primary election preceding the April vote. Abraham Palomar and Michelle López are both well-known, decent people; I only wish they were running in different districts so I could support both of them in the race.
However, their wishes deserve great respect. It is praiseworthy that they possess the moral and civic courage to seek public office on the Waukegan City Council—a body that already includes three Hispanics: José Guzmán (District 2), Juan Martínez (District 3), and Víctor Félix (District 4).
It might be getting ahead of myself to imagine—not as a pipe dream, but as a real possibility, given that we are a majority-Latino community—that if five of them were to win, it would mark the first time in the city’s history that the council held a Hispanic majority.
But, as Jack the Ripper said, “Let’s take it one step at a time.” First, they need to gather the signatures required to get on the ballot; next, they must rouse the “white elephant”—that massive block of inactive voters—to actually cast their ballots; and finally, we will see how they settle into the seats they are seeking.
Later on, we will see how they go about helping their community; that is where things will get interesting, as that is where they will run up against long-established barriers.
