Lake County, IL. – Una mujer de 31 años pierde la vida ahogada luego de rescatar a su hijo en el río Des Plaines.
El domingo 16 de agosto de 2026, aproximadamente a las 7:01 p.m., la Policía de la Reserva Forestal del Condado de Lake y el Departamento de Bomberos de Libertyville acudieron al río Des Plaines, cerca de la reserva forestal Independence Grove en Libertyville, para atender un rescate acuático.
Los equipos de emergencia llegaron al lugar y encontraron a la víctima, una mujer de 31 años, inconsciente y sin respirar. Fue trasladada al centro médico Advocate Condell, donde se certificó su fallecimiento en la sala de urgencias.
La investigación preliminar indica que la mujer entró en el río Des Plaines para ayudar a su hijo. Tras lograr poner a salvo a su hijo, ella misma quedó sumergida. Un familiar y otras personas presentes acudieron rápidamente en su ayuda y la sacaron del agua.
Se notificó a la Oficina del Forense del Condado de Lake, cuyos funcionarios acudieron al hospital.
La fallecida ha sido identificada como Angelina Khalimendik, de 31 años y residente de Hinsdale. El lunes 17 de agosto de 2026 se realizó una autopsia en la Oficina del Forense del Condado de Lake. Los resultados del examen indican que la muerte de la Sra. Khalimendik es compatible con ahogamiento.
El incidente continúa bajo investigación por parte de la Policía de la Reserva Forestal del Condado de Lake y la Oficina del Forense del Condado de Lake.

Des Plaines River at Independence Grove Forest Preserve Death
On Sunday, August 16, 2026, at approximately 7:01 p.m., the Lake County Forest Preserve Police and Libertyville Fire Department responded to the Des Plaines River, near Independence Grove Forest Preserve, in Libertyville for a water rescue. First responders arrived and found the victim, a 31-year-old woman, unconscious and not breathing. She was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center where she was pronounced dead in the emergency room.
Preliminary investigation indicates that the woman entered the Des Plaines River to assist her son. After successfully helping her son to safety she became submerged herself. A family member and bystanders rushed to her aid and removed her from the water.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office was notified and responded to the Hospital.
The deceased has been identified as 31-year-old Angelina Khalimendik, of Hinsdale. On Monday, August 17, 2026, an autopsy was conducted at the Lake County Coroner’s Office. Examination results indicate that Ms. Khalimendik’s death is consistent with drowning.
The incident remains under investigation by the Lake County Forest Preserve Police and the Lake County Coroner’s Office.
