Lake County, IL. – Investigadores de accidentes de la Oficina del Sheriff del Condado de Lake han imputado a un hombre de Cary por abandonar el lugar de un accidente con lesiones personales y por conducir bajo la influencia del alcohol, tras un atropello con fuga ocurrido durante la noche.
El 16 de marzo de 2026, aproximadamente a las 11:10 p. m., agentes del Sheriff del respondieron a un reporte sobre una persona tendida en el suelo en el área de la Ruta 22 y Kelsey Road, en la zona no incorporada de Barrington. Al llegar al lugar, los agentes encontraron a un hombre de 33 años, residente de Crystal Lake, gravemente herido.
El hombre de Crystal Lake fue trasladado inicialmente al Hospital Advocate Good Shepherd y, posteriormente, transferido al Hospital Advocate Lutheran General en Park Ridge debido a la gravedad de sus lesiones.
Basándose en las pruebas halladas en el lugar de los hechos y en las lesiones del hombre, los agentes determinaron que este había sido atropellado por un vehículo mientras caminaba por el borde de la calzada.
Los investigadores de accidentes del Sheriff determinaron rápidamente que las piezas de vehículo dejadas en la escena pertenecían a un Volkswagen Atlas de color plateado o gris, el cual probablemente circulaba en dirección oeste por la Ruta 22.

Finalmente, los investigadores localizaron el vehículo responsable en el domicilio de su propietario registrado, situado en la cuadra 300 de Sterling Circle, en Cary.
Las investigaciones determinaron que el conductor del Volkswagen, John Zurawski, de 73 años y residente en el mismo domicilio, se encontraba bajo la influencia del alcohol en el momento en que ocurrió el atropello con fuga. Tras revisar los hechos y las circunstancias del caso, la Oficina del Fiscal del Estado del Condado de Lake aprobó los siguientes cargos contra Zurawski:

• Abandonar el lugar de un accidente con lesiones personales (delito grave de Clase 4)
• Conducir bajo la influencia del alcohol (delito menor)
  El sheriff John D. Idleburg declaró: “Estoy muy orgulloso de nuestro equipo, que participó en esta investigación. Gracias a sus sólidas habilidades de investigación, lograron determinar rápidamente que se trataba de un accidente con fuga, localizar el vehículo responsable y hacer que el conductor rinda cuentas por sus acciones imprudentes. Nuestros pensamientos están con el peatón mientras se recupera de sus graves lesiones. Conducir bajo los efectos de sustancias es imprudente, incorrecto y peligroso, especialmente cuando existen muchas opciones disponibles para llegar a casa de manera segura con un conductor sobrio”.
  Zurawski permanece detenido en la Cárcel del Condado de Lake a la espera de una audiencia judicial inicial que se celebrará esta mañana. Es posible que se presenten cargos adicionales.

Sheriff’s crash investigation
Lake County Sheriff’s Crash Investigators have charged a Cary man with leaving the scene of a personal injury crash and driving under the influence of alcohol, following an overnight hit-and-run traffic crash.
On March 16, 2026, at approximately 11:10 p.m., Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a report of a person down in the area of Route 22 and Kelsey Road, unincorporated Barrington. Sheriff’s deputies arrived and found a 33-year-old man of Crystal Lake seriously injured.
The Crystal Lake man was initially transported to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital and then transferred to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge with significant injuries. Based on evidence at the scene and the man’s injuries, sheriff’s deputies determined he was struck by a vehicle, as the man was walking on the side of the roadway.
Sheriff’s crash investigators quickly determined the vehicle parts left behind at the scene belonged to a silver or grey Volkswagen Atlas, which was likely traveling westbound on Route 22.
Sheriff’s crash investigators utilized the Flock Safety License Plate Reader System and located a suspect vehicle, which subsequently registered to a Cary man. Sheriff’s crash investigators located the offending vehicle at the registered owner’s home in the 300 block of Sterling Circle, Cary.
Crash investigators determined the driver of the Volkswagen, John Zurawski, 73, of the same residence was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the hit-and-run crash.
After reviewing the facts and circumstances of the case, the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved the following charges against Zurawski:

• Leaving the Scene of a Personal Injury Crash (Class 4 Felony)
• DUI – Alcohol (Misdemeanor)
  Sheriff John D. Idleburg said, “I am very proud of our team who were involved in this investigation. Because of their strong investigative skills, they were able to quickly determine this was a hit-and-run crash, track down the offending vehicle, and hold the driver accountable for his reckless actions. Our thoughts are with the pedestrian as he recovers from his serious injuries. Driving impaired is reckless, wrong, and dangerous, especially when there are many options available to get home safely with a sober driver.”
  Zurawski remains held in the Lake County Jail pending an initial court hearing this morning. Additional charges are possible.
