Waukegan, IL. – La Sociedad Histórica de Waukegan organiza una conferencia con motivo del Día Internacional de Conmemoración del Holocausto. La Dra. Karen Glinert Carlson, educadora e investigadora de larga trayectoria, presentará la charla titulada: “Cómo Albert Einstein salvó a mi familia y por qué la historia es importante”, el 27 de enero a las 14:00 horas en el Museo de Historia de Waukegan, ubicado en el edificio Carnegie, 1 N. Sheridan Road, Waukegan, Illinois.
La Dra. Carlson es hija y nieta de sobrevivientes del Holocausto. Creció en un ambiente de silencio y, hasta su adolescencia en Estados Unidos, desconocía su origen judío y cómo el Holocausto había afectado a su familia. En su conmovedora charla, la Dra. Carlson relata cómo descubrió que Albert Einstein era su primo y cómo este salvó a su madre y a sus abuelos durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial.
En 2018, fue invitada a Ulm, Alemania, ciudad natal de la familia de su madre, incluyendo al Dr. Einstein, para hablar sobre la estrecha relación de su familia con Einstein, lo que dio inicio a una búsqueda de siete años para descubrir el destino de su familia en catorce países. Su viaje de autodescubrimiento está lleno de reflexiones y aprendizajes para cualquiera que desee comprender cómo el pasado influye en el presente. Hablará sobre la importancia de recordar lo sucedido en las décadas de 1930 y 1940, y por qué sigue siendo relevante hoy en día.

Albert Einstein Saved Her Family
The Waukegan Historical Society is hosting a lecture on the occasion of International Holocaust Awareness Day. Dr. Karen Glinert Carlson, a lifelong educator and researcher, will present “How Albert Einstein Saved My Family and Why History Matters” on January 27, 2pm, at the Waukegan History Museum at the Carnegie, 1 N. Sheridan Road, Waukegan, Illinois.
Dr. Carlson is the daughter and granddaughter of Holocaust survivors. She was raised in a culture of silence and until she was a teen growing up in the United States, did not know she was Jewish or how the Holocaust had affected her family. In her riveting talk, Dr. Carlson discusses how she learned that Albert Einstein was her cousin and how he saved her mother and her grandparents during World War II.
In 2018, she was invited to Ulm, Germany, birthplace of her mother’s family including Dr. Einstein, to discuss her family’s close connection to Einstein, thus beginning a seven-year search to uncover the fate of her family in fourteen countries. Her journey of self-discovery is filled with insights and reflections for anyone who wants to understand how the past shapes them today. She will discuss why it is important to remember what happened in the 1930s and 1940s, and why it matters today.
