LGBTQ
LGBTQ significa Lesbianas, Gays, Bisexuales, Trans y Queer.
El término lesbiana se refiere a las mujeres que se sienten atraídas sexualmente por las mujeres.
La palabra gay se refiere a los hombres que se sienten atraídos sexualmente por los hombres.
El término Bisexual se refiere a alguien que se siente sexualmente atraído por hombres y mujeres. La T en LGBTQ significa Trans, que puede referirse a transexuales o transexuales. Transgénero se refiere a las personas que sienten que se identifican más estrechamente con el género que no fueron asignados al nacer. Transexual se refiere a las personas que se han sometido a una cirugía para cambiar su cuerpo físico para que coincida más estrechamente con su género preferido.
La Q en LGBTQ abarca a muchas personas que no se identifican como LGBT, pero que tampoco se ajustan a lo que se considera normal en la sociedad. La palabra Queer significa simplemente ser diferente de lo que tradicionalmente se acepta. Este término incluye a las personas que se identifican como asexuales, panexuales, intersexuales, no binarias o cualquier otra identidad que se desvíe de la norma. La Q también puede significar Cuestionamiento, que se refiere a alguien que puede no estar seguro de cómo se identifica.
Cada año, la Campaña de Derechos Humanos lleva a cabo un estudio sobre los jóvenes en América. En 2017, encuestaron a más de 12,000 jóvenes de 13 a 17 años de edad en los 50 estados. El estudio encontró que los jóvenes que se identifican como LGBTQ informan tasas más altas de depresión, ansiedad, uso de drogas y menor autoestima. También se encontró que el 67% de los jóvenes escuchan a sus familias hacer comentarios negativos sobre las personas LGBTQ, y los jóvenes de color experimentan esta negatividad más que sus compañeros blancos. Además, 4 de cada 5 jóvenes LGBTQ de color informaron haber experimentado discriminación racial. Estos jóvenes se encuentran en una desventaja única, ya que experimentan discriminación debido a sus identidades LGBTQ y raciales.
Independientemente de la raza, los Centros para el Control y la Prevención de Enfermedades (CDC, por sus siglas en inglés) reportan índices más altos de intentos de suicidio entre jóvenes LGBTQ. Tener un ambiente de amor y apoyo puede hacer toda la diferencia. Simplemente aprender sobre lo que significa LGBTQ es un paso notable.

What is LGBTQ?
LGBTQ stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, and Queer.
The term Lesbian refers to women who are sexually attracted to women.
The word Gay refers to men who are sexually attracted to men.
The term Bisexual refers to someone who is sexually attracted to both men and women.
The T in LGBTQ stands for Trans, which can refer to transgender or transsexual. Transgender refers to individuals who feel as if they more closely identify with the gender that they were not assigned at birth. Transsexual refers to individuals who have had surgery to change their physical body to more closely match their preferred gender.
The Q in LGBTQ encompasses many individuals who do not identify as LGBT, but who also do not conform to what is considered normal in society. The word Queer means simply being different from what is traditionally accepted. This term includes people who identify as asexual, pansexual, intersex, non-binary, or any other identity that deviates from the norm. The Q can also stand for Questioning, which refers to someone who may be uncertain of how they identify.
Every year, the Human Rights Campaign conducts a study on youth in America. In 2017, they surveyed over 12,000 youth aged 13-17 across all 50 states. The study found that youth who identify as LGBTQ report higher rates of depression, anxiety, drug use, and lower self-esteem. It was also found that 67% of youth hear their families make negative comments about LGBTQ people, and youth of color experience this negativity more than their white peers. Also, 4 out of 5 LGBTQ youth of color reported personally experiencing racial discrimination. These youth are at a unique disadvantage, as they experience discrimination due to their LGBTQ and racial identities.
Regardless of race, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports higher rates of suicide attempts among LGBTQ youth. Having a loving and supportive environment can make all the difference. Simply learning about what LGBTQ stands for is a remarkable step.
