Lake County, IL. – Lake County State’s Attorney Michael G. Nerheim testified in front of the Illinois House Mental Health Committee in Chicago Monday regarding the dangers of teen vaping.
Nerheim, along with Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin, Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike, and others were invited to speak with the panel of state lawmakers to discuss the vaping crisis in Illinois.
Nerheim and Berlin spoke with lawmakers about how flavored e-cigarettes like Mango, Cucumber and Crème Brulee was a major catalyst in getting teens hooked on nicotine and vaping.
“It was an honor to meet with Illinois state legislators on such an important issue,” Nerheim said. “Vaping is harming our teenagers and legislation needs to be enacted to curb this health epidemic.”
Nerheim and his legal partners from the Chicago law firms of Romanucci and Blandin, LLC; Hart McLaughlin and Eldridge, LLC; and Edelson, PC., filed a first of its kind lawsuit in the Nineteenth Judicial Circuit Court of Lake County against e-cigarette provider Juul Labs for intentionally pushing teens to become hooked on nicotine-aided e-cigarettes through the use of flavoring and deceptive social media marketing campaigns.
The Lake County complaint claims Juul’s use of flavors and its predatory marketing campaign was designed to recruit new users at a young age by getting them hooked on the nicotine in e-cigarettes, just like advertising promoted in the past by big tobacco. Juul, the owner of more than 75 percent of the e-cigarette marketplace, is accused in the lawsuit of launching a massive online advertising campaign that specifically targeted teenagers on social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
