Waukegan, IL. – El Distrito Escolar 60 de la Unidad Comunitaria de Waukegan y el Consejo de Maestros de Waukegan (WTC, Federación de Maestros del Condado de Lake, IFT Local 504) ratificaron un nuevo contrato de cuatro años, concluyendo las negociaciones que comenzaron en abril de 2023. Ambas partes ratificaron el acuerdo esta semana.
Los aspectos más destacados del nuevo acuerdo incluyen un aumento competitivo, apoyo ampliado a la salud mental para maestros y estudiantes, medidas que fomentan una mayor colaboración entre la escuela y el hogar, y pautas que brindan apoyo adicional a los estudiantes con necesidades diversas y a los educadores que les enseñan. Un nuevo calendario salarial de 35 escalones también garantiza una escala salarial más transparente con movimientos de escalones y carriles para los docentes.
Dada la escasez de maestros a nivel nacional y su impacto en Waukegan y otros lugares, tanto la administración del distrito como el sindicato acordaron colaborar en un contrato que aumentaría la retención y garantizaría que los maestros tengan lo que necesitan para apoyar a los estudiantes de Waukegan. Los aumentos salariales durante el primer año, que promedian aproximadamente el 20 por ciento, están diseñados para hacer que Waukegan sea más competitivo con los distritos circundantes, y los aumentos posteriores ayudarán al Distrito 60 a continuar reclutando y reteniendo maestros capacitados.
Tras la ratificación, el presidente del WTC, Andrew Friedlieb, dijo: “Estoy orgulloso de nuestro sindicato y nuestro distrito por trabajar juntos para poner a nuestros estudiantes en primer lugar. Negociamos un acuerdo justo que brinda a los maestros los recursos y la base necesarios para brindarles a los estudiantes el mejor apoyo posible. Este contrato fortalecerá a nuestro distrito”.
La superintendente de escuelas, Theresa Plascencia, compartió que está emocionada por la ratificación de esta semana. “Estoy muy orgullosa de nuestra administración y del esfuerzo colaborativo del Sindicato de Maestros. Los dos equipos trabajaron muy duro para llegar a un acuerdo que valore a nuestros maestros y apoye el trabajo que realizan para educar a los niños de esta comunidad”, dijo Plascencia. “Sé que hablo en nombre de nuestro equipo administrativo, así como de la Junta de Educación, cuando digo que esperamos una compensación más competitiva para nuestros educadores de primera línea y estamos entusiasmados por la continuidad que traerá este acuerdo”.
El nuevo acuerdo será retroactivo al 1 de julio de 2023, cuando expiró el contrato anterior.

Teachers have new contract
Waukegan Community Unit School District 60 and the Waukegan Teachers Council (WTC, Lake County Federation of Teachers, IFT Local 504) ratified a new four-year contract, concluding negotiations that began in April 2023. Both sides ratified the agreement this week.

Highlights of the new agreement include a competitive raise, expanded mental health support for teachers and students, measures that foster greater collaboration between the school and the home, and guidelines that impart extra support for students with diverse needs and the educators who teach them.
A new 35-step salary schedule also ensures a more transparent pay scale with step and lane movements for teachers.
Given the national teacher shortage and its impact in Waukegan and elsewhere, both the district administration and the union agreed to collaborate on a contract that would boost retention and ensure teachers have what they need to support Waukegan students.
Salary increases for the first year, which average approximately 20%, are designed to make Waukegan more competitive with surrounding districts, and subsequent raises will help District 60 continue to recruit and retain skilled teachers.
Upon ratification, WTC President Andrew Friedlieb said, “I’m proud of our union and our district for working together to put our students first. This contract is a win for them and for our community because it offers what’s necessary to attract and retain excellent teachers.
We bargained a fair agreement that gives teachers the resources and the foundation needed to give students the best support possible. This contract will make our district stronger.”
Superintendent of Schools, Theresa Plascencia shared that she is excited for this week’s ratification. “I am very proud of our administration and the Teacher Union’s collaborative effort. The two teams worked very hard to reach an agreement that values our Teachers and supports the work they do to educate the children of this community,” Plascencia said.
“I know I speak for our Administrative team, as well as the Board of Education when I say we’re looking forward to more competitive compensation for our frontline educators, and are excited for the continuity this agreement will bring.”
The new agreement will be retroactive to July 1, 2023, when the previous contract expired.
