San Diego, CA. – Incautan Oficiales de Aduanas y Protección Fronteriza en la instalación comercial de Otay Mesa más de 3,100 libras de metanfetamina, fentanilo en polvo, pastillas de fentanilo y heroína como parte de la segunda redada de metanfetamina más grande a lo largo de la frontera suroeste en la historia de la Patrulla Fronteriza (CBP, por sus siglas en inglés) basado en información desarrollada por la DEA, en colaboración con HSI.
“Esta incautación masiva es un testimonio de lo que las agencias de aplicación de la ley pueden hacer cuando unimos fuerzas: evitar que ingresen a nuestro país más de $7 millones en drogas mortales; salvando así, innumerables vidas de muertes por adicción y sobredosis”, dijo el agente especial a cargo de la DEA, John W. Callery. “La DEA aprecia a nuestros excelentes socios encargados de hacer cumplir la ley en San Diego, especialmente a aquellos que trabajan incansablemente para proteger las fronteras de nuestra nación. Continuaremos trabajando juntos para desbaratar las organizaciones de tráfico de drogas en cada oportunidad que se nos brinde”.
El hallazgo
El 9 de octubre, alrededor de las 9:45 a.m., un conductor llegó al cruce fronterizo de carga con un cargamento de tractor-remolque que se manifestó como suministros médicos. El oficial refirió al conductor, el camión y el envío para una inspección más intensiva.
Los oficiales de CBP examinaron el camión utilizando el sistema de imágenes del puerto, similar a una radiografía, y encontraron anomalías en la parte trasera del remolque. El transporte fue enviado al muelle y un canino alertó sobre las cajas dentro del remolque.
Los oficiales descargaron el envío y descubrieron 1.816 paquetes combinados con suministros médicos que contenían principalmente puntas de pipeta de plástico transparente, botellas de spray de descontaminación de superficie y herramientas de pipeta calibradas (utilizadas para tomar muestras y dispensar líquido).
“Los contrabandistas intentarán de todas las formas posibles para que sus productos crucen la frontera y debido a la asociación entre CBP, Investigaciones de Seguridad Nacional y la DEA, ocurrió esta incautación significativa y los detuvimos”, dijo Anne Maricich, directora interina de campo de CBP, operaciones en San Diego.
Los oficiales de CBP luego extrajeron aproximadamente 3,014 libras de metanfetamina, 64 libras de heroína, 29 libras de fentanilo en polvo y casi 37 libras de píldoras de fentanilo, por un valor estimado de $7.2 millones. Los oficiales de CBP confiscaron los narcóticos y el transporte.
El conductor, un ciudadano mexicano de 47 años, fue arrestado y entregado la custodia del equipo de investigación conjunto del Servicio de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas, Investigaciones de Seguridad Nacional y la Administración de Control de Drogas; enfrentará cargos criminales.
Impressive methamphetamine seizure
U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Otay Mesa commercial facility Friday seized more than 3,100 pounds of methamphetamine, fentanyl powder, fentanyl pills, and heroin as part of the second largest methamphetamine bust along the southwest border in the history of the CBP, based on information developed by DEA, working jointly with HSI.
“This massive seizure is a testament of what law enforcement agencies can do when we combine forces – prevent over $7 million worth of deadly drugs from entering our country; thus saving countless lives from addiction and overdose deaths,” said DEA Special Agent in Charge John W. Callery. “DEA cherishes our great law enforcement partners in San Diego, especially those who work tirelessly to protect our nation’s borders. We will continue to work together to disrupt drug trafficking organizations at every opportunity we are given.”
The Facts
On Oct. 9, at about 9:45 a.m., a driver arrived at the cargo border crossing with a tractor-trailer shipment that was manifested as medical supplies. The officer referred the driver, truck, and shipment for a more intensive inspection.
CBP officers screened the truck using the port’s imaging system, similar to an x-ray, and found anomalies with the rear of the trailer. The conveyance was sent to the dock and a canine alerted to the boxes inside the trailer. Officers offloaded the shipment and discovered 1,816 packages comingled with the medical supplies that primarily contained clear plastic pipette tips, spray bottles of surface decontaminate, and calibrated pipette tools (used for sampling and dispensing liquid).
“Smugglers will try every way possible to try and get their product across the border and because of the partnership between CBP, Homeland Security Investigations, and DEA, this significant seizure occurred and we stopped them,” said Anne Maricich, acting CBP director of field operations in San Diego. “I’m proud of the CBP officers’ dedication to our mission; they continue to stop dangerous drugs from entering our communities.”
CBP officers later extracted approximately 3,014 pounds of methamphetamine, 64 pounds of heroin, 29 pounds of fentanyl powder, and almost 37 pounds of fentanyl pills, worth an estimated $7.2 million. CBP officers seized the narcotics and conveyance.
The driver, a 47–year-old male Mexican citizen, was arrested and turned over the custody of the joint investigative team from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Homeland Security Investigations, and the Drug Enforcement Administration; he will face criminal charges.
