Condado de Lake, IL. – El Fiscal del Estado en Lake County, Mike Nerheim informa de la participación del FBI y la policía estatal en el caso del policía de Waukegan que dio muerte a balazos al joven afroamericano Marcellis Stinnette el pasado martes 20 de octubre.

“Como se informó anteriormente, el Departamento de Policía de Waukegan ha pedido a la Policía del Estado de Illinois que lleve a cabo una investigación independiente sobre el oficial involucrado en el tiroteo que tuvo lugar el martes 20 de octubre. El miércoles 21 de octubre, me comuniqué con el Departamento de Justicia de EE. UU. para solicitar que revisen las circunstancias que rodearon este incidente. Se me ha informado que han aceptado hacerlo.
Confío en el trabajo que está realizando la Policía del Estado de Illinois y agradezco la ayuda del FBI. Como he dicho antes, una vez concluida la investigación, se revisarán todas las pruebas y se tomará una decisión final con respecto a los posibles cargos. Tener todos los recursos disponibles y tantos ojos frescos e independientes como sea posible es fundamental para este proceso.

FBI and State, take the Marcellis Stinnette case
Lake County State’s Attorney Mike Nerheim reports the involvement of the FBI and state police in the case of the Waukegan police officer who shot and killed the young African American Marcellis Stinnette last Tuesday, October 20.
Attached is a statement from Nerheim about the investigation into the officer involved shooting in Waukegan on Oct. 20:
“As has been previously reported, the Waukegan Police Department has called in the Illinois State Police to conduct an independent investigation into the officer involved shooting that took place on Tuesday, October 20. On Wednesday, October 21, I contacted the U.S. Department of Justice to request they review the circumstances surrounding this incident. I have been advised that they have agreed to do so.
I am confident in the work being done by the Illinois State Police and welcome the assistance of the FBI. As I have said before, once the investigation is concluded, all the evidence will be reviewed and a final decision will be made with respect to any potential charges. Having all available resources and as many independent fresh eyes as possible is critical to this process.
If state charges are approved, the court process will begin, which will be open to the public. If state charges are not approved, a detailed statement will be provided explaining the facts, applicable laws, and basis for the decision. At that time, my office’s case file will also be made available to the public on the state’s attorney’s office website at www.lcsao.org.
I continue to urge calm as we undertake this process and pledge complete transparency. Once again our condolences continue to go out to the families and friends of Marcellis Stinnette and our prayers for a speedy recovery go out to the woman wounded in this unfortunate situation”.
