Lake County, IL. – Muere preso en su celda, acostado en su cama, el pasado 23 de septiembre, aproximadamente a las 8:34 p. m., informó la oficina del Sheriff del Condado de Lake.
Un oficial correccional estaba realizando rondas en el Pod 1 Este. Mientras hacía sus rondas, observó a un recluso, un hombre de 51 años, de Barrington, acostado en su cama en lo que parecía ser un estado inconsciente.
El oficial penitenciario llamó a la puerta varias veces, pero el recluso no respondió. Luego, el oficial entró en la celda del recluso e intentó despertarlo, sin embargo, el recluso no respondía.
El oficial comunicó por radio una emergencia médica e inmediatamente comenzó los primeros auxilios, convocó al personal de enfermería y una ambulancia. Los oficiales correccionales utilizaron un desfibrilador externo automático y le realizaron primeros auxilios al hombre. Los paramédicos de Waukegan llegaron y se hicieron cargo de la atención primaria. Después de brindar atención médica durante un período prolongado de tiempo, el recluso fue declarado muerto.
El recluso fue llevado inicialmente a la Cárcel del Condado de Lake justo después de la medianoche del 23 de septiembre, luego de ser arrestado por una orden de arresto pendiente en la zona no incorporada de Barrington, por violar una orden de protección. Fue asignado a una celda de doble recluso en el Pod 1 Este, luego de su clasificación inicial, sin embargo, no tenía un compañero de celda. La autopsia reveló que había condiciones médicas subyacentes, que McCann no sufrió lesiones significativas y que los resultados finales están pendientes de las pruebas de toxicología.

Jail inmate death investigation
On September 23, 2022, at approximately 8:34 p.m., a Lake County Sheriff’s Correctional Officer was conducting rounds in Pod 1 East. While doing his rounds, he observed an inmate, a 51-year-old man, of Barrington, laying on his bed in what appeared to be an unresponsive state. The correctional officer knocked on the door several times, but the inmate did not respond. The correctional officer then entered the inmate’s cell and attempted to wake him, however, the inmate remained unresponsive.
The correctional officer radioed a medical emergency and immediately began first aid, summoned nursing staff and an ambulance. Correctional officers utilized an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and performed CPR on the man. Waukegan paramedics arrived and took over primary care. After performing medical care for an extended period of time, the inmate was pronounced deceased.
The inmate was initially brought to the Lake County Jail just after midnight on September 23rd, after being arrested for an outstanding warrant in unincorporated Barrington, for violating an order of protection. He was assigned to a double-inmate cell in Pod 1 East, following his initial classification, however, he did not have a cellmate. At the time of the incident, Pod 1 East was on lockdown and the inmate was inside his cell by himself. Rounds were conducted at least 30 minutes prior to this incident and at that time, the inmate appeared okay. The inmate had numerous underlying health conditions. There did not appear to be any suspicious marks or injuries on the inmate’s body, however, an autopsy will be conducted by the Lake County Coroner’s Office on Monday.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office was notified and responded to the scene.
The victim has been identified as 51-year-old Patrick McCann. On September 26, 2022, an autopsy was completed at the Lake County Coroner’s Office. The autopsy revealed that there were underlying medical conditions, that there were no significant injuries to Mr. McCann, and final results are pending toxicology testing.
Per protocol, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office requested the assistance of the Lake County Major Crime Task Force to conduct an independent investigation.
