Autopsy results indicate that Mr. Richard Garfinkle died from multiple gunshot wounds.

Highwood, IL. – On Thursday, April 9, 2026, shortly after 4:48 p.m., Highwood Police Officers were involved in an officer involved shooting in the 200 block of Morgan Place, Highwood.
Officers had been dispatched to the residence, where the incident occurred, for a report of a 58-year-old, reportedly highly intoxicated, suicidal man. Upon arrival, officers learned the man had locked himself inside a bathroom.
After speaking with the man for several minutes, requesting he exit and speak with paramedics about his condition, he abruptly exited the bathroom armed with what was later determined to be a replica pistol, pointed in the officers’ direction. At that time one officer discharged their firearm, striking the man.
Officers immediately rendered aid until paramedics, who had been staged nearby, arrived. The man was transported to Endeavor Health Highland Park Hospital, where he was pronounced dead in the emergency room.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office was notified and responded to the hospital.
The deceased has been identified as 58-year-old Richard Garfinkle, of Highwood. On Friday, April 10, 2026, an autopsy was conducted at the Lake County Coroner’s Office. Autopsy results indicate that Mr. Garfinkle died from multiple gunshot wounds. No further information on the extent of the injuries is available as this is an ongoing investigation.
In accordance with protocol and Illinois law, the Lake County Major Crime Task Force is conducting an independent investigation into the incident.
