Lake County, IL. – El chofer de un autobús escolar conducía bajo los efectos del alcohol causando un accidente mientras transportaba estudiantes, quienes resultaron ilesos.
El 17 de febrero de 2022, aproximadamente a las 4:20 p. m., los agentes del Sheriff del condado de Lake fueron enviados a Cuba Road y Ela Road en Deer Park por un accidente de tránsito que involucró a un autobús escolar. El autobús escolar transportaba a los estudiantes a casa desde la escuela secundaria Prairie del distrito escolar 220 de Barrington.
Los agentes llegaron y verificaron que ninguno de los estudiantes a bordo del autobús resultó herido, ni tampoco el conductor del otro vehículo.
Determinaron que el conductor del autobús escolar, James Dolan, de 61 años, de la cuadra 4000 de Victoria Drive, Hoffman Estates, viajaba hacia el norte por Ela Road y giró a la izquierda hacia Cuba Road hacia el oeste. Dolan no cedió el paso al tráfico que se aproximaba y dio la vuelta frente a un Chevrolet Traverse 2015 en dirección sur, conducido por un hombre de 58 años de Carpentersville. El conductor del Traverse no pudo detenerse en el camino cubierto de nieve y golpeó el autobús escolar.
Los uniformados detectaron signos de que Dolan estaba afectado por el alcohol. Investigaciones posteriores revelaron que Dolan efectivamente conducía bajo la influencia del alcohol y tenía más del doble del límite legal de alcohol en su sistema. Dolan solicitó ir al hospital debido a un problema médico y posteriormente fue transportado a un hospital del área en ambulancia. Fue ingresado en el hospital.
El 18 de febrero de 2022, los agentes obtuvieron una orden de arresto para Dolan por conducción agravada bajo la influencia del alcohol (delito grave de clase 4). Un juez del condado de Lake fijó la fianza de la orden en $100 mil dólares.
Dolan fue dado de alta del hospital el 20 de febrero de 2022 y fue puesto bajo custodia. Fue transportado a la cárcel del condado de Lake en espera de una audiencia judicial inicial el 22 de febrero de 2022 a las 9:00 a. m. en la sala del tribunal T020.
El Distrito Escolar 220 de Barrington ha cooperado con la oficina del sheriff a lo largo de esta investigación.
El Sheriff John D. Idleburg dijo: “Es absolutamente vergonzoso que un conductor profesional de autobús escolar ponga a todos esos niños bajo su cuidado en un riesgo significativo al conducir ebrio. Estamos agradecidos de que ninguno de los estudiantes, y nadie más resultó herido, ya que el terrible mal juicio del conductor podría haber tenido un trágico resultado”.
Todos los acusados se presumen inocentes a menos que se pruebe su culpabilidad en un tribunal de justicia.
Drunk school bus driver causes crash
On February 17, 2022, at approximately 4:20 p.m., Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to Cuba Road and Ela Road in Deer Park for a traffic crash involving a school bus. The school bus was transporting students home from Barrington School District 220’s Prairie Middle School.
Sheriff’s deputies arrived and verified none of the students onboard the bus were injured, nor was the driver of the other vehicle.
Sheriff’s deputies determined the school bus driver, James Dolan, 61, of the 4000 block of Victoria Drive, Hoffman Estates, was traveling northbound on Ela Road and made a left turn onto westbound Cuba Road. Dolan failed to yield to oncoming traffic and made the turn in front of a southbound 2015 Chevrolet Traverse, driven by a 58-year-old man of Carpentersville. The driver of the Traverse was unable to stop on the snow-covered road and struck the school bus.
Sheriff’s deputies at the scene detected signs that Dolan was impaired by alcohol. Further investigation revealed Dolan was indeed driving under the influence of alcohol, and had more than twice the legal limit of alcohol in his system. Dolan requested to go to the hospital due to a medical issue and was subsequently transported to an area hospital via ambulance. He was admitted to the hospital.
On February 18, 2022, sheriff’s deputies obtained an arrest warrant for Dolan for aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol (class 4 felony). A Lake County Judge set the bond on the warrant at $100,000.00.
Dolan was discharged from the hospital on February 20, 2022, and was taken into custody. He was transported to the Lake County Jail pending an initial court hearing on February 22, 2022 at 9:00 a.m. in courtroom T020.
Barrington School District 220 have been cooperative with the sheriff’s office throughout this investigation.
Sheriff John D. Idleburg said, “It is absolutely shameful that a professional school bus driver would put all of those children in his care at significant risk by driving drunk. We are grateful none of the students, and nobody else was injured, as the driver’s horrifically poor judgement could have resulted in a tragic outcome.”
All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
