Lake County, IL. – El día después de que Damari Perry, de 6 años, fuera sepultado, la Oficina del Fiscal del Estado del Condado de Lake presentó ayer miércoles 2 de febrero, una acusación de 19 cargos contra su madre y su hermano, acusándolos de asesinato en primer grado en la muerte del niño.
Los fiscales presentaron los cargos de asesinato de una manera que les permite buscar sentencias de cadena perpetua contra la madre de Damari, Jannie Perry, de 38 años, y su hermano, Jeremiah Perry, de 20, por el asesinato.
Jannie y Jeremiah Perry fueron acusados conjuntamente por un Gran Jurado del Condado de Lake de ocho cargos de asesinato y cargos adicionales de: agresión agravada de un niño, desmembrar un cuerpo humano, conspiración, agresión doméstica agravada, ocultamiento de una muerte homicida, poner en peligro la vida o la salud de un niño, abuso de un cadáver, y cada uno también fue acusado de obstrucción a la justicia.
Jannie Perry también fue acusada de un cargo de no informar la muerte o desaparición de un niño menor de 13 años.
Los fiscales han declarado que la evidencia muestra que, Jannie y Jeremiah Perry, formularon y promulgaron un plan para castigar severamente a Damari a través de una exposición prolongada a una ducha fría.
El gran jurado encontró evidencia de que el asesinato fue “excepcionalmente brutal y atroz”, lo que permite a los fiscales buscar sentencias de cadena perpetua por los cargos de asesinato para cada uno de los acusados. El cargo de desmembrar un cuerpo humano surgió de la evidencia de que la familia quemó los restos de Damari después de su muerte. Los fiscales indicaron que pueden solicitar hasta 60 años de prisión solo por el cargo de desmembramiento.
El fiscal estatal del condado de Lake, Eric Rinehart, declaró: “Mientras los fiscales consideraban la escena del crimen donde murió Damari, quedó claro que se trataba de un plan calculado contra un niño pequeño. Los minutos finales de Damari justifican las mejoras en la sentencia que acompañan a circunstancias tan “brutales y atroces”. La asombrosa falta de atención médica de los acusados demuestra su intención de acabar con la vida de Damari. Transportar y quemar el cuerpo como parte de un encubrimiento también justificaba los cargos graves adicionales que presentamos hoy”.
Jannie y Jeremiah Perry comparecerán ante el tribunal el 7 de febrero para ser procesados por los cargos. El jefe de revisión de delitos graves, Steve Scheller, y la jefa de justicia juvenil, Karen Levi, así como el fiscal estatal adjunto, Russell Caskey, han sido asignados para procesar el caso.
“Nuestros fiscales han trabajado los fines de semana y las noches para encontrar la verdad de este terrible caso. Debo elogiar la dedicación del Jefe Scheller, el Jefe Levi, los defensores de las víctimas en el Centro de Defensa de los Niños y los detectives del Departamento de Policía de North Chicago por sus incontables horas en este importante asunto”.
El funeral de Damari Perry se llevó a cabo el 1 de febrero de 2022.

Prosecutor will seek life imprisonment
The day after 6-year-old Damari Perry was laid to rest, the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office on Wednesday filed a 19-count indictment against his mother and brother, charging both with first-degree murder in the child’s death.
Prosecutors filed the murder charges in a way that allows them to seek natural-life sentences against Damari’s mother, Jannie Perry, 38, and brother, Jeremiah Perry, 20, for the killing.

Jannie and Jeremiah Perry were jointly indicted by a Lake County Grand Jury on eight counts of murder, and additional counts of: aggravated battery of a child, dismembering a human body, conspiracy, aggravated domestic battery, concealment of a homicidal death, endangering the life or health of a child, abuse of a corpse, and each was also charged with obstructing justice.
Jannie Perry was also indicted on one count of failure to report the death or disappearance of a child under 13 years of age.
Prosecutors have stated that the evidence shows that Jannie and Jeremiah Perry formulated and enacted a plan to severely punish Damari through prolonged exposure in a cold shower.
The grand jury found evidence that the murder was “exceptionally brutal and heinous,” which allows prosecutors to seek natural-life sentences on the murder charges for each of the defendants. The charge of dismembering a human body arose from evidence that the family burned Damari’s remains after his death. Prosecutors indicated that they may seek up to 60 years in prison for the dismembering charge alone.   
Lake County State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart stated, “As prosecutors considered the crime scene where Damari died, it became clear that this was a calculated plan against a small child. Damari’s final minutes warrant the sentencing enhancements that accompany such ‘brutal and heinous’ circumstances. The defendants’ stunning failure to seek medical attention demonstrates their intent to end Damari’s life. Transporting and burning the body as part of a cover up also warranted the additional serious charges we filed today.”
Jannie and Jeremiah Perry are set to appear in court on Feb. 7 to be arraigned on the charges.  Chief of Felony Review Steve Scheller and Chief of Juvenile Justice Karen Levi as well as Assistant States Attorney Russell Caskey have been assigned to prosecute the case.
“Our prosecutors have worked weekends and nights to find the truth of this awful case. I must commend the dedication of Chief Scheller, Chief Levi, the victim advocates at the Children’s Advocacy Center and the detectives with North Chicago Police Department for their countless hours in this important matter.”  The funeral of Damari Perry was held on Feb. 1, 2022.
