Wadsworth, IL. – Investigadores de accidentes de tráfico del sheriff del condado de Lake están investigando un accidente mortal de fuga ocurrido durante la noche en Wadsworth.
El 6 de septiembre de 2024, aproximadamente a las 11:45 p.m., agentes del sheriff del condado de Lake fueron enviados a atender un informe de una “persona tirada” en Dilleys Road, justo al sur de Wadsworth Road.

Con base en una investigación preliminar, los investigadores de accidentes del sheriff creen que la mujer iba en bicicleta en dirección norte por Dilleys Road, cuando fue atropellada por detrás por un todoterreno GMC que iba en dirección norte. Cuando fue atropellada, salió despedida de la bicicleta y la bicicleta quedó atrapada debajo del todoterreno, mientras el conductor huía de la escena. La mujer fue luego atropellada por un Hyundai Elantra que se dirigía hacia el sur, conducido por un hombre de 23 años de Waukegan. El conductor del Hyundai coopera con la investigación.
Se recibió información de un testigo que vio una camioneta GMC que arrastraba una bicicleta hacia el este por Wadsworth Road. El vehículo fue identificado y ubicado estacionado en una residencia en Winthrop Harbor. El vehículo tenía daños consistentes con su participación en el choque con fuga. El vehículo fue incautado y los investigadores del accidente identificaron al presunto conductor de ese vehículo, un hombre de 32 años de Winthrop Harbor.
La Oficina del Forense del Condado de Lake respondió a la escena e identificó a la fallecida como Tiana Smith, de 18 años, de Zion. El lunes 9 de septiembre de 2024, se realizó una autopsia en la oficina forense del condado de Lake. Fatal hit-and-run traffic crash
Lake County Sheriff’s Traffic Crash Investigators are investigating an overnight fatal hit-and-run crash that occurred in Wadsworth.
On September 6, 2024, at approximately 11:45 p.m., Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to a report of a ‘person down’ on Dilleys Road just south of Wadsworth Road. Sheriff’s deputies arrived and located an adult woman deceased in the roadway. The woman sustained significant trauma, consistent with being struck by a vehicle.
Based on a preliminary investigation, sheriff’s crash investigators believe the woman was riding a bicycle northbound on Dilleys Road, when she was struck from behind by a northbound GMC SUV. When she was struck, she was thrown from the bicycle, and the bicycle became lodged under the SUV, as the driver fled from the scene. The woman was then struck by a southbound Hyundai Elantra, driven by a 23-year-old man of Waukegan. That driver of the Hyundai is cooperative with the investigation.
Information was received from a witness who saw a GMC SUV dragging a bicycle eastbound on Wadsworth Road. The vehicle was identified and located parked at a residence in Winthrop Harbor. The vehicle had damage consistent with being involved in the hit-and-run crash. The vehicle was seized, and crash investigators have identified the suspected driver of that vehicle, a 32-year-old man of Winthrop Harbor.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene. The deceased has been identified as 18-year-old Tiana Smith, of Zion. On Monday, September 9, 2024, an autopsy was conducted at the Lake County Coroner’s Office. Autopsy results indicate that Ms. Smith died from Blunt Force Injuries as a result of the crash.
The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Team and criminal charges will be sought following the conclusion of their investigation.
