Waukegan, IL. – Sin duda alguna, las elecciones del 1 de abril entrante marcarán el futuro de la comunidad hispana en tema de educación, y el Distrito Escolar 60 de Waukegan, tiene a tres candidatos que están directamente comprometidos con su gente, por hablar el mismo lenguaje y por ser los más viables a ofrecer el apoyo directo, sin burocracia, a las familias que así lo necesiten.
Michael Rodríguez, Angela Ramírez y Nicholas Shepherd, son los candidatos que esperan el voto para poder ser los portavoces de los latinos en la junta directiva de este distrito escolar donde la mayoría de la comunidad estudiantil es hispana.
Rodríguez busca la reelección, tiene la experiencia y ha sido presidente de la junta; mientras que Ramírez, ha trabajado en muchas áreas de asistencia comunitaria, incluso dentro del distrito escolar donde ha sido enlace con las familias hispanas; Shepard por su parte, es migrante español, con pleno conocimiento de la justicia, ha trabajado con el procurador de justicia del estado en Lake County y sabe de los lazos familiares.
Hablaron para Puro Futbol y mencionaron sus cartas de presentación para llegar a ser la mejor opción para nuestra comunidad estudiantil hispana en Waukegan.

He sido miembro de la Junta de Educación de Waukegan durante doce años y su presidente durante ocho. Soy padre de nueve hijos adultos, y mis cinco hijos menores se graduaron de la Preparatoria de Waukegan. Tres de mis nietos cursaron sus estudios en el Sistema Escolar de Waukegan y otros tres asisten actualmente a las Escuelas Públicas de Waukegan. Tres de mis hijos son maestros de escuela, y mi hijo menor enseña en el Sistema Escolar Público de Waukegan. La educación siempre ha sido importante en nuestra familia, y mis hijos son mi inspiración.
Se ha demostrado que, si un niño no lee a nivel de grado para tercer grado, sus posibilidades de tener un buen desempeño escolar se ven gravemente reducidas. Waukegan todavía tiene demasiados estudiantes que no leen a nivel de grado. Los maestros y la administración han reconocido que hay estudiantes de octavo grado en nuestras escuelas secundarias de Waukegan que están listos para pasar a la preparatoria, pero apenas saben leer. Esto es una receta para el fracaso. A nuestros niños se les está acabando el tiempo. El Distrito 60 necesita un liderazgo fuerte para revertir esta situación. Creo que nuestra Junta Escolar necesita un liderazgo más centrado. En los últimos años, hemos presenciado desorganización y disfunción en ella. Me gustaría regresar para ayudar a impulsarla en una dirección más positiva.
Conocí a Angela Ramírez y Nicholas Shepherd poco después de comenzar mi campaña de reelección para la Junta Escolar. Compartimos muchos de los mismos objetivos y aspiraciones para los niños de Waukegan, así como estrategias para lograrlos.

Como orgullosa madre de tres graduados de Waukegan, me postulo porque creo en nuestros maestros y en nuestros estudiantes. Me apasiona mejorar la educación y defender a las familias. He dedicado mi vida a empoderar a las familias, asegurándome de que tengan la información necesaria para tomar decisiones acertadas sobre la educación de sus hijos. Defiendo la transparencia y la rendición de cuentas, además de fomentar la colaboración. Realmente se necesita un pueblo para criar a un niño.
Los maestros necesitan apoyo y recursos, al igual que los padres. La colaboración entre el hogar y la escuela es esencial para la educación y el éxito de nuestros hijos. Nuestro crecimiento como distrito escolar depende de la honestidad, la mentalidad abierta y la voluntad de hacer lo correcto. Juntos, podemos construir un futuro más brillante que refleje nuestro potencial colectivo. Me entusiasma la oportunidad de contribuir a ese cambio.

Nicholas Shepherd
Soy el mayor de cinco hermanos y fui criado por mis abuelos en el área metropolitana de Chicago. Tras emigrar a Estados Unidos desde España, mi abuelo trabajó en las fábricas de aislamiento. Mi abuelo me enseñó el valor del trabajo duro y la amabilidad, y mi abuela le enseñó el valor de la comunidad y de defender a los demás.
Gracias a la fe que mis abuelos depositaron en mí, fui el primero de mi familia en graduarme de la universidad y de la facultad de derecho.
Vivo en Waukegan con mi amado esposo, con quien llevo 14 años, y nuestro hijo. Tuvimos la suerte de que nuestro hijo de 16 años estuviera con nosotros a través del sistema de acogimiento del DCFS.
He aprendido que las escuelas no siempre están preparadas para atender a los niños y las familias en sus propias circunstancias. Tengo la intención de trabajar con administradores y educadores para ayudar a mejorar nuestras escuelas para nuestros niños, de modo que nuestros estudiantes y familias tengan acceso a los recursos necesarios. Necesitan brindarles a nuestros hijos una educación de calidad.
Como fiscal, trabajo para la Fiscalía Estatal del Condado de Lake. Como fiscal, he procesado casos de violencia doméstica y otros delitos violentos. La seguridad de todos nuestros niños es fundamental para fomentar un entorno en el que aprendan y crezcan.
Nuestras escuelas, ahora más que nunca, necesitan líderes con sentido común que busquen lo mejor para nuestros hijos, como yo, Michael Rodríguez, y Angela Ramírez, para guiarlas hacia un futuro mejor.

Hispanics ask for vote
Without a doubt, the April 1 elections will mark the future of the Hispanic community in terms of education, and Waukegan School District 60 has three candidates who are directly committed to their people, speaking the same language and being the most viable candidates to offer direct, unbureaucratic support to families in need.
Michael Rodríguez, Angela Ramírez, and Nicholas Shepherd are the candidates hoping to be the Latino spokespersons on the governing board of this school district, where the majority of the student body is Hispanic.
Rodríguez is seeking reelection and has experience and has served as board president. Ramírez has worked in many areas of community assistance, including within the school district, where she served as a liaison with Hispanic families. Shepard, for his part, is a Spanish immigrant with a keen understanding of the justice system. He has worked with the state attorney general in Lake County and is familiar with family ties. They spoke to Puro Futbol and shared their potential to become the best option for our Hispanic student community in Waukegan.

I have served twelve years as a Member of the Waukegan Board of Education, and eight years as its President. I am the father of nine grown children, and my five youngest sons graduated from Waukegan High School. Three of my grandchildren went through the Waukegan School System, and three more grandchildren are currently attending Waukegan Public Schools. Three of my children are school teachers, and my youngest son teaches in the Waukegan Public School System. Education has always been important in our family, and my children are my inspiration.
It has been demonstrated that, if a child is not reading at grade level by 3rd grade, his/her chances of performing well in school are severely diminished. Waukegan still has far too many students who are not reading at grade level. It has been acknowledged by teachers and administration that there are students in 8th grade in our Waukegan middle schools, who are ready to move on to High School, but can barely read. This is a recipe for failure. Our children are running out of time. District 60 needs strong leadership to turn this around.
I believe our School Board needs more focused leadership. In recent years we have witnessed disorganization and disfunction in our School Board. I would like to come back to help move the Board in a more positive direction.
I met Angela Ramirez and Nicholas Shepherd shortly after beginning my campaign for reelection for School Board. We share many of the same goals and aspirations for the children of Waukegan, as well as strategies for how to achieve them. We have been working well together, and I support their candidacies.

As a proud mother of 3 Waukegan graduates, I run because I believe in our teachers and in our students. I am passionate about improving education and advocating for families. I have dedicated my life to empowering families by assuring they have the information they need to make sound decisions about their child’s education. I champion transparency and accountability along with fostering collaboration. It truly takes a village to raise a child.
Teachers need support and resources, as well as parents. The partnership between home and school is essential for our children’s education and success. Our growth as a school district depends on honest, open-mindedness and willingness to do what is right. Together, we can build a brighter future that reflects our collective potential. I am excited about the opportunity to contribute to that change.

Nicholas Shepherd
I am, the oldest of five, and I was raised by my grandparents in the Chicagoland Area. After immigrating to the United States from Spain, my grandfather went to work in the insulation factories. My grandfather taught me the value of hard work and kindness, and my grandmother taught him the value of community and to stand up for others.
With my grandparents’ faith in me, I was the first person in my family to graduate college, and the first person to graduate from law school.
I live in Waukegan with my loving husband of 14 Years, and our son. We were blessed to have our 16-year-old son be placed with us through DCFS foster care.
As a foster parent, I have learned that the schools are not always equipped to meet children and families where they are at. I intend to work with administrators and educators to help make our schools better for our children, so that our students and families are connected with the resources they need to provide our children with a quality education.
As a career, I work as a Prosecutor for the Lake County State Attorney’s Office. As a prosecutor, I have prosecuted cases of domestic violence, and other violent crimes. The safety and security of all our children is important in fostering an environment in which our children learn and grow.
Our schools now, more than ever, need common sense leaders who want the best for our children, like me, Michael Rodriguez, and Angela Ramirez to Shepherd our schools into a better tomorrow.
