Estado de Illinois seguirá emitiendo SNAP pese al cierre del gobierno federal.

Round Lake, IL.- Si usted es uno de los dos millones de residentes de Illinois que dependen del programa SNAP (también conocido como estampillas de comida) el Departamento de Servicios Humanos de Illinois compartió un anuncio importante al final de la semana pasada.
Mientras que el gobierno federal en Washington DC continúa siendo parcialmente cerrado debido a negociaciones políticas, el Estado de Illinois continuará emitiendo beneficios de SNAP a los residentes de Illinois durante la duración del cierre en el mes de febrero.
En un comunicado de prensa, el secretario del Departamento de Servicios Humanos (IDHS, por sus siglas en inglés) anunció que: “Nuestra oficina estatal de IDHS garantizaría la disponibilidad continua de SNAP”, pero mencionó un detalle importante: los beneficios de SNAP para febrero llegarán a los clientes temprano- llegando alrededor de la fecha del 20 de enero.

SNAP benefits will continue
If you are one of the two million residents of Illinois that rely on the SNAP program (also known as Food Stamps), the Illinois Department of Human Services shared an important announcement at the end of last week. While the federal government in Washington DC continues to be partially shut down due to political negotiations, the State of Illinois will continue to issue SNAP benefits to Illinois residents through the duration of the shutdown.
In a press release from the Department of Human Services, the Secretary of DHS announced that our state DHS office would ensure the continued availability of SNAP, but mentioned an important detail: the SNAP benefits for February will arrive to customers early- to be issued on or around the date of January 20th. Usually customers would receive their February benefits within the first few days of the month of February, but because of these unusual circumstances, the benefits will come early.
It’s important to note that these benefits that customers receive at the end of January are not extra benefits. They are the benefits to cover the month of February. Customers are advised to note this and be sure to save those benefits for their use in February. With this announcement, IDHS noted that customers do not need to contact the IDHS office or case workers because of this different disbursement date this month. The press release assured that IDHS staff will be working this week to make sure that all clients receive their benefits according to this temporary schedule. The press release did not share any information about changes in future disbursements beyond February.
What is SNAP?
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP as it is known by its initials in English) is a federal food assistance program that is administered in Illinois by its Department of Human Services. SNAP supports eligible low-income families with nutrition assistance and subsidies to purchase food. SNAP benefits vary from person to person depending on their income and need and in Illinois are distributed through the LINK Card.
