Waukegan, IL. – El Departamento de Bomberos de Waukegan respondió el miércoles 2 de febrero aproximadamente a las 8:00 p. m. para una alarma de incendio automática en 3 E. Madison St., en el muelle de esta ciudad. Las primeras unidades que llegaron a la escena encontraron llamas dentro de una instalación de almacenamiento de botes muy grande.
El jefe de batallón, Mark Pietraszak, actualizó la respuesta a un trabajo fijo para un incendio estructural confirmado. Las tripulaciones se enfrentaron a los desafíos de navegar y acceder al incendio en el almacén de botes grandes.
La respuesta finalmente se actualizó a una cuarta alarma debido a las extensas operaciones y al frío extremo que tuvieron que enfrentar los bomberos en la escena.
Los barcos en llamas eran difíciles de extinguir debido a su tamaño y accesibilidad. El almacén albergaba aproximadamente 60-70 barcos grandes.
Los departamentos respondieron de todo el condado de Lake, McHenry y Kenosha. Aproximadamente 100 Bomberos respondieron para combatir el incendio en esta gélida noche. Los equipos pasaron la mayor parte de la noche tratando de extinguir el muy difícil incendio, y finalmente lo controlaron alrededor de las 2:30 a.m.
En este momento, los equipos permanecen en la escena apagando los puntos calientes. No hubo heridos ni ocupantes en el edificio en el momento del incendio.
La causa del incendio se desconoce en este momento y está bajo investigación. La pérdida estimada por incendio podría ser de varios millones de dólares dependiendo del daño a otros barcos.
El Jefe de Bomberos Todd Zupec declaró: “Las cuadrillas hicieron un trabajo excepcional en condiciones muy extremas. La naturaleza del almacenamiento del barco es difícil de navegar en condiciones de humo y fuego. Las múltiples alarmas permitieron al comando rotar las tripulaciones para mantenerlas seguras durante un incendio difícil”.
Fire inside a very large boat storage
The Waukegan Fire Department responded Wednesday February 2nd at approximately 8:00PM for an automatic fire alarm to 3 E Madison St. First arriving units on scene found flames showing inside a very large boat storage facility.
Battalion Chief Mark Pietraszak upgraded the response to a working still for a confirmed structure fire. Crews were met with challenges of navigating and accessing the fire in the large boat warehouse. The response was eventually upgraded to a 4th alarm due to extensive operations and the extreme cold the Firefighters on scene had to deal with.
The boats on fire were difficult to extinguish due to their size and accessibility. The warehouse housed approximately 60-70 large boats. Departments responded from all over Lake, McHenry, and Kenosha County. Approximately 100 Firefighters responded to battle the blaze on this frigid night.
Crews spent most of the night trying to extinguish the very difficult fire, finally bringing it under control around 2:30AM. At this time crews remain on scene putting out hot spots. There were no injuries or occupants in the building at the time of the fire.
The cause of the fire is unknown at this time and under investigation. Estimated fire loss could be several million dollars depending on the damage to other boats. Fire Marshal Todd Zupec stated: “The crews did an exceptional job in very extreme conditions.
The nature of the boat storage is difficult to navigate in smoke and fire conditions. The multiple alarms allowed Command to rotate crews to keep them safe during a difficult fire.
