Gurnee, IL. – Los departamentos de Policía y Bomberos de Gurnee anuncian el 28º Trote Anual del Pavo en Memoria de Jon Callaghan, que se llevará a cabo la mañana del Día de Acción de Gracias, 24 de noviembre a las 8:00 a.m.
La carrera/caminata divertida de 5 km comienza en la cuadra 4600 de Old Grand Avenue y termina frente a la Estación de Bomberos de Gurnee #1 en Old Grand Ave. Después de la carrera se proporcionan refrigerios en el salón de la Iglesia Comunitaria de Gurnee.
En el otoño de 1994, se organizó el primer Turkey Trot como una carrera de 5 km que se llevaría a cabo en la mañana del Día de Acción de Gracias. Se pidió a los corredores de Turkey Trot que hicieran una donación de $10 a la Iglesia Comunitaria de Gurnee para ayudar a financiar su cena festiva para los necesitados y el personal militar de los Grandes Lagos.
El evento fue patrocinado por el Departamento de Policía de Gurnee. Alrededor de una docena de corredores participaron en ese primer evento. El Turkey Trot continuó cada año y la participación aumentó.
Jon Callaghan era un estudiante de la ahora escuela River Trail (O’Plaine) en Gurnee, quien falleció en 1997 después de una valiente batalla contra el cáncer de neuroblastoma.
Luego, el evento pasó a llamarse Jon Callaghan Memorial Turkey Trot y sus padres, Mike y Kim Callaghan, se involucraron en el evento anual. Según la familia Callaghan, los fondos recaudados se han utilizado para ayudar a Warren Township Food Pantry, University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital, School District 56 programas de necesidades especiales y muchos otros.

Police and Firefighters Announce Turkey Race
The Gurnee Police and Fire departments are announcing the 28th Annual Jon Callaghan Memorial Turkey Trot, to be held on Thanksgiving morning, November 24th at 8:00 A.M. The 5k fun run/walk starts in the 4600 block of Old Grand Avenue and ends in front of Gurnee Fire Station #1 on Old Grand Ave. Refreshments are provided after the fun run in the Gurnee Community Church hall.
In the fall of 1994, the first Turkey Trot was organized as a 5K run to be held on Thanksgiving morning. Turkey Trot runners were asked to make a $10.00 donation to the Gurnee Community Church to help fund their holiday dinner for the needy and Great Lakes military personnel. The event was sponsored by the Gurnee Police Department. About a dozen runners participated in that first event. The Turkey Trot continued each year and participation increased.
Jon Callaghan was a student at the now River Trail (O’Plaine) School in Gurnee, who passed away in 1997 after a courageous battle with neuroblastoma cancer. The event was then renamed the Jon Callaghan Memorial Turkey Trot and his parents, Mike and Kim Callaghan, became involved with the annual event. Per the Callaghan family, the funds raised have been used to help the Warren Township Food Pantry, University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital, School District 56 special needs programs, and many others.
Each year, proceeds are also donated to the Gurnee Community Church. The Gurnee Community Church Youth Mission Trip participants raise funds for many area programs.
Any donations to the Turkey Trot are appreciated and sponsorship is welcome. Participation in the walk/run is encouraged.
