Waukegan, IL – ¡Luces! ¡Cámara! ¡Acción!, una nueva serie de películas y conversaciones comunitarias, se estrena el 16 de septiembre en el campus de Lakeshore de College of Lake County. El programa es una colaboración entre Cool Learning Experience, Brushwood Center y College of Lake County con el documentalista Emmett Williams.
El primer evento de esta serie de tres partes se centrará en la inmigración y las historias y necesidades de los vecinos indocumentados. La velada incluye una proyección de La familia García dirigida por el creador del programa Emmett Williams.
Este documental de 30 minutos cuenta la historia de Alex García, quien se refugió en una iglesia durante tres años en St. Louis para evitar la deportación. Si lo enviaran de regreso a su Honduras natal, no podría ver a su esposa e hijos durante al menos 10 años.
La Familia García es un documental inspirador que cuenta la historia de cómo la familia y su comunidad se unieron frente a una situación imposible. El panel de discusión del 16 de septiembre será moderado por Natalia Ospina/Brushwood Center e incluirá a Celeste Flores/Mano A Mano, Lesley Tenorio/Educación y Servicios de la Comunidad Hispanoamericana y Juan Carlos Arroyo.
El galardonado documentalista Emmett Williams creó la idea detrás de ¡Luces! ¡Cámara! ¡Acción! mientras vivía en Washington, DC, donde se realizaron las proyecciones mensuales durante los dos años anteriores a la pandemia.
“Durante los últimos años, las comunidades de todo el país han visto y sentido el poder del activismo y se han preguntado cómo pueden convertirse en parte de hacer de este mundo un lugar mejor. ¡Luces! ¡Cámara! ¡Acción! brinda a la audiencia las herramientas para marcar la diferencia”, afirmó Williams.
Williams es el primer miembro digital de Cool Learning Experience, una organización sin fines de lucro con sede en Waukegan dedicada a fomentar el bienestar del niño en su totalidad y sus conexiones saludables con la familia, la comunidad y la naturaleza. Cool Learning Experience colaboró con College of Lake County y Brushwood Center para llevar la serie de eventos a Waukegan. Brushwood Center trabaja en colaboración con socios comunitarios, artistas, proveedores de atención médica y científicos para mejorar la equidad en la salud y el acceso a la naturaleza en el condado de Lake, Illinois y la región de Chicago. La película está diseñada para empoderar a los ciudadanos de Waukegan con herramientas para volverse más activos y comprometidos con su comunidad. Lights! Camera! Take action!
A new film and community conversation series, launches September 16 at the College of Lake County Lakeshore Campus. The program is a collaboration between Cool Learning Experience, Brushwood Center, and College of Lake County with documentary filmmaker Emmett Williams. The first event of this three-part series will focus on immigration and the stories and needs of undocumented neighbors. The evening includes a screening of The Garcia Family directed by program creator Emmett Williams. This 30-minute documentary tells the story of Alex Garcia, who took sanctuary in a church for three years in St. Louis to avoid deportation. If sent back to his native Honduras he would be unable to see his wife and children for at least 10 years. The Garcia Family is an inspiring documentary telling the story of how the family and their community came together in the face of an impossible situation. The panel discussion on September 16 will be moderated by Natalia Ospina/Brushwood Center and will include Celeste Flores/Mano a Mano, Lesley Tenorio/Hispanic American Community Education and Services and Juan Carlos Arroyo. Award winning documentary filmmaker Emmett Williams created the idea behind LIGHTS! CAMERA! TAKE ACTION! while living in Washington, DC where the monthly screenings ran for the two years prior to the pandemic. “Over the past several years, communities around the country have seen and felt the power of activism and have asked how they can become part of making this world a better place. LIGHTS! CAMERA! TAKE ACTION! gives the audience the tools to make a difference,” Williams stated. Williams is the first Digital Fellow for Cool Learning Experience, a Waukegan based nonprofit devoted to nurturing the well-being of the whole child and their healthy connections to family, community and nature. Cool Learning Experience collaborated with the College of Lake County and Brushwood Center to bring the event series to Waukegan. Brushwood Center works collaboratively with community partners, artists, health care providers, and scientists to improve health equity and access to nature in Lake County, Illinois, and the Chicago region. LIGHTS! CAMERA! TAKE ACTION! is designed to empower Waukegan citizens with tools to become more active and engaged within their community. Screening at the campus of College of Lake County – Lakeshore, the evening program series consists of a film screening connected to an issue impacting Waukegan, Q&A and a panel discussion regarding the issue with local activists and community leaders and finally audience members learning how to become activists in their community. Future LIGHTS! CAMERA! TAKE ACTION! events will be held October 14, and November 18 on the campus of CLC – Lakeshore.
