Gurnee, IL. – A group of Woodland Middle School teachers are volunteering to pick up paint brushes in order to increase the positive environment for students in their school.
They call themselves the Bathroom Beautification Society and during the summer they started volunteering to paint positive messages on the walls of student bathrooms at the Middle School. Messages like “You are capable of amazing things” and “Don’t forget to be awesome” have been projected and painted on walls at both the boys and the girls bathrooms. The teachers believe they can make a difference in a small way through a common gathering spot all students use – the restroom. So far, they have finished six bathrooms and they estimate there are about 36 more to complete.
“We thought it would provide a positive impact,” special education teacher Leslie Sammarco said.
The idea started when Family and Consumer Science teacher Ellen Crahan saw what James F. Bay Elementary School in Texas was doing with positive messaging on student bathroom walls and she shared the information on Facebook with her colleagues.
Painters include art teachers Kelly Eggleston and Darcy Adams, reading specialist Megan Eskew, special education teachers Leslie Sammarco and Liz Howard, math teacher Lynnae Reichert, music teacher Sara Roediger, and Ellen Crahan. Technology instructor Judy Ryan is the group’s secretary.
Some positive comments have already come in from students and the teachers are confident about moving forward with their contributions. “I think the majority of students will appreciate it,” math teacher Lynnae Reichert said.
