Waukegan, IL. – Webster Middle School math teacher, Ms. Elvia Uriostegui, was recently honored as the Outstanding Middle School Teacher of the Year by the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics (ICTM).
The honor, according to ICTM, annually recognizes highly motivated and effective middle school math teachers in Illinois who employ a variety of sound teaching strategies and instructional resources, use research on the teaching and learning of mathematics to guide instruction, and represent the profession with enthusiasm to students, teachers, and parents.
Ms. Uriostegui learned of the honor in May, and she will be formally recognized by the ICTM at its annual conference in October. Prior to the ceremony, the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) took time last month to recognize Ms. Uriostegui and several other Illinois educators who have been bestowed statewide recognition by various organizations.
“I was very humbled and excited at the same time. I am passionate about the work I do in Waukegan, and this was the icing on the cake for me,” Ms. Uriostegui said of the honor.
Ms. Uriostegui, a 2002 Waukegan High School graduate, has spent eleven years teaching middle school math in Waukegan Public Schools, first at Jefferson Middle School, and the last four years at Webster.
This is Ms. Uriostegui’s second year in a row being recognized on the state level. In 2015/2016 she was recognized by ISBE with a ‘Those Who Excel’ Award of Recognition in the Classroom Teacher category.
