Zion, IL. – In 2016, Elmwood Elementary School, along with schools in 29 other countries, helped the World Sport Stacking Association (WSSA) set a new Guinness World Record for “Most People Sport Stacking at Multiple Locations in One Day.” The goal for 2018 is 635,000 people. Elmwood was able to pledge 185 stackers in hopes of setting another world record. Although verifications for stackers are still being sent in, Elmwood’s PE teacher, Jeffery Miller, and Principal Deirdre Garnett are hopeful they have helped set another world record.
Sport stacking is not just about competition at Elmwood. Over the past four years Mr. Miller has been incorporating sport stacking in as many gym lessons as possible. He has set-up different stations which includes students working on up-stacking (building cups up)/down-stacking (breaking down what was built), and relay races as a way to work on hand-eye coordination and teamwork.
Mr. Miller said that he enjoys having the kids participate in sport stacking because it levels the “playing field” for students. Sport stacking is something that all students can participate in and enjoy no matter how athletic or non-athletic they may view themselves. At Elmwood, everyone gets excited about sport stacking whether it’s because they get to work with their friends, or because they down-stacked a tower in less than 5 seconds.
