North Chicago, IL. – El sábado 14 de agosto de 13:00 a 15:00 horas, se llevará a cabo una reunión del Ayuntamiento Ambiental en el Centro Cultural Greenbelt ubicado en el 1200 Green Bay Road, en esta ciudad.
La Representante Estatal por el Distrito 60, Rita Mayfield, en asociación con Clean Power Lake County, Sierra Club Illinois Chapter y el Illinois Environmental Council actualizarán a la comunidad en problemas ambientales que impactan nuestra área.
Los temas incluyen el próximo cierre de la planta de carbón y su conversión a una instalación de energía limpia, la Ley de Empleos de Energía Limpia y otros objetivos ambientales.
“La planta de carbón operada por NRG existe desde hace unos 93 años. No existe una forma sana o segura de quemar carbón en una ciudad densamente poblada como Waukegan. Se cerrará el próximo año, con una fecha prevista de junio de 2022. Parte del proceso de transición implicará la limpieza de los estanques de cenizas de carbón existentes, que es una fuente de contaminación del agua”, declara la representante estatal.
Mayfield dice que realizar la limpieza necesaria y la transición de la instalación a energía limpia mantendrá los trabajos y continuará generando los ingresos que la ciudad necesita.
“Mucha gente requiere el cambio. Es un placer continuo trabajar con otros funcionarios electos, activistas comunitarios y nuestros excelentes grupos ambientales como Sierra Club, Clean Power Lake County y el Illinois Environmental Council”, dijo Mayfield.

El evento se ha estructurado como una reunión segura de COVID al aire libre, con medidas de distanciamiento social observadas. Este es un evento familiar y las personas de todas las edades son bienvenidas y se les anima a asistir.

On Saturday August 14th from 1pm to 3pm, an Environmental Town Hall meeting will be held at the Greenbelt Cultural Center.
State Representative Rita Mayfield in partnership with Clean Power Lake County, Sierra Club Illinois Chapter and the Illinois Environmental Council will update our community regarding environmental issues that impact our area. Topics include the coming closure of the coal plant and its conversion to a clean energy facility, the Clean Energy Jobs Act and other environmental objectives.
The coal plant operated by NRG has been in existence for about 93 years. There is no healthy or safe way to burn coal in a densely populated city like Waukegan. It will close next year, with a target date of June 2022. Part of the transition process will involve cleaning up the existing coal ash ponds, which is a source of water contamination. Mayfield says that performing the necessary clean up and transitioning the facility to clean energy will maintain jobs and continue to generate revenue the city needs.
“Change requires a lot of people. It is an ongoing pleasure to work with other elected officials, community activists and our excellent environmental groups such as Sierra Club, Clean Power Lake County and the Illinois Environmental Council,” said Mayfield. “It is a sincere pleasure to serve you and everyone in our community. The event has been structured as an outdoor COVID safe gathering, with social distancing measures observed. This is a family friendly event and people of all ages are welcome and encouraged to attend.
