Lake County, IL. – Un juez del condado de Lake concedió la petición de la Fiscalía para detener a Joey L. Ruffin, de 38 años, y a Dominque Servant, de 33, quienes han sido acusados de dos cargos de asesinato en primer grado y un cargo de poner en peligro la vida de un menor con resultado de muerte, un delito grave de clase 3.
El 6 de febrero de 2026, el Departamento de Policía de Round Lake Beach y el Grupo de Trabajo de Delitos Graves del Condado de Lake llevaron a cabo una investigación después de que la policía de Round Lake Beach respondiera a un informe sobre un niño inconsciente. El niño fue trasladado a un hospital local, donde se confirmó su fallecimiento.
En la audiencia de detención, los fiscales argumentaron que, a pesar de la falta de antecedentes penales de ambos acusados, las pruebas demuestran que ambos participaron en un patrón prolongado de abuso físico y psicológico contra el niño de ocho años. Afirmaron que el abuso se extendió más allá del niño fallecido, señalando que un niño de 10 años que vivía en la misma casa requirió hospitalización por desnutrición y maltrato, y que otro niño menor también residía en la vivienda.

En vista de esto, argumentaron que ambos acusados representaban una amenaza continua para otros y que causarían un daño psicológico significativo a los niños sobrevivientes si fueran puestos en libertad.
La Fiscalía argumentó además que ninguna condición de libertad podría mitigar adecuadamente este peligro ni impedir el acceso de los acusados a sus otros hijos, y por lo tanto, la detención es necesaria para proteger a la comunidad. El tribunal concedió la petición de la Fiscalía para detener a Ruffin y Servant.

Two charged with First-Degree Murder
A Lake County judge granted the State’s petition to detain Joey L. Ruffin, 38, and Dominque Servant, 33, who have been charged with two counts of First-Degree Murder and one count of Child Endangerment Causing Death, a class 3 felony.
On February 6, 2026, the Round Lake Beach Police Department and the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force conducted an investigation after Round Lake Beach Police responded to a report of an unresponsive child. The child was transported to a local hospital where the child was pronounced deceased.
At the detention hearing, prosecutors argued that despite the lack of criminal history of both defendants, the evidence shows both defendants engaged in a long-term pattern of mental and physical abuse of the eight-year-old child. They stated the abuse extended beyond the deceased child, noting that a 10-year-old in the home required hospitalization for malnourishment and abuse, while a younger child also lived in the residence.
Prosecutors emphasized that the offense was not impulsive but occurred over an extended period of time with knowledge and planning. In light of this, prosecutors argued that both defendants were a continuing threat to others and posing significant psychological harm to the surviving children if released.
The State further argued that no conditions of release could adequately mitigate this danger or prevent access to the defendant’s other children, and therefore detention is necessary to protect the community. The court granted the State’s petition to detain both Ruffin and Servant.
