Green Oaks, IL. – Pareja arrestada por estafa de 17 mil dólares contra una anciana del condado de Lake. El 29 de septiembre de 2025, detectives del Sheriff del Condado de Lake arrestaron a dos hombres responsables de estafar a una mujer de 80 años de Green Oaks.
La investigación reveló a principios de este mes que la víctima recibió un correo electrónico fraudulento que supuestamente provenía de PayPal, alegando que había realizado una compra de más de 760 dólares. El correo electrónico le indicaba que llamara a un número de teléfono si no autorizaba la compra. Cuando la víctima llamó, los estafadores accedieron a sus cuentas bancarias.
Los sospechosos transfirieron dinero entre las cuentas de la víctima y luego la convencieron de que PayPal le había “reembolsado” demasiado dinero. Le indicaron que retirara 17 mil en efectivo y se los entregara.
El 8 de septiembre, la víctima se reunió con un hombre, posteriormente identificado como Danny Paio, de 29 años, de Nueva York, NY, en un centro para personas mayores en Green Oaks. Paio le robó el dinero a la víctima mientras estaba acompañado por Chul Paik, de 44 años, residente de Englewood, Nueva Jersey, quien conducía el vehículo de alquiler utilizado en la estafa.
Los detectives del sheriff utilizaron lectores de matrículas Flock para identificar el vehículo utilizado por Paik y Paio. Durante la investigación, determinaron que Paik y Paio eran los autores de la estafa y notificaron el incidente a las autoridades regionales. El 29 de septiembre de 2025, agentes de policía de Elmhurst detectaron el vehículo conducido por Paik y realizaron una parada de tráfico. Los detectives del sheriff del condado de Lake acudieron para interrogar a Paik y Paio. Tras los interrogatorios, los arrestaron.
Los detectives del sheriff localizaron más de 16 mil dólares en su vehículo, que se cree provenían de otra recogida fraudulenta realizada ayer. Tras revisar los hechos y las circunstancias de la investigación, la Fiscalía Estatal del Condado de Lake aprobó dos cargos de Robo (delitos graves de clase 2) contra Paio y Paik. Ambos permanecen detenidos en la Cárcel del Condado de Lake a la espera de una audiencia judicial inicial esta mañana.

Pair arrested in $17,000 fraud
On September 29, 2025, Lake County Sheriff’s Detectives arrested two men responsible for scamming an 80-year-old woman of Green Oaks out of $17,000.
The investigation revealed earlier this month the victim received a fraudulent email purporting to be from PayPal, claiming she had made a purchase of more than $760. The email directed her to call a phone number if she did not authorize the purchase. When the victim called, scammers on the other end gained access to her bank accounts.
The suspects transferred money between the victim’s accounts, then convinced her that PayPal had “refunded” her too much money. They instructed her to withdraw $17,000 in cash and turn it over to them.
On September 8, the victim met with a man, later identified as Danny Paio, 29, of New York, NY, at a senior living center in Green Oaks. Paio took the cash from the victim while accompanied by Chul Paik, 44, of Englewood, NJ, who drove the rental vehicle used in the scheme.
Sheriff’s detectives were able to utilize Flock License Plate Readers to identify the vehicle used by Paik and Paio. During their investigation, sheriff’s detectives determined Paik and Paio were the offenders involved in the scam and notified regional law enforcement of the incident. On September 29, 2025, Elmhurst Police Officers spotted the vehicle driven by Paik and conducted a traffic stop. Lake County Sheriff’s Detectives responded to interview Paik and Paio. Following their interviews, sheriff’s detectives arrested both Paik and Paio.
Sheriff’s detectives located more than $16,000 in their vehicle, believed to be proceeds from another fraudulent pickup they had conducted earlier yesterday.
After reviewing the facts and circumstances of the investigation, the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved two counts of Theft (class 2 felonies) against Paio and Paik. Both remain held in the Lake County Jail pending an initial court hearing this morning.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office reminds the community that legitimate businesses and government agencies will never ask you to withdraw cash or transfer money to resolve a billing issue. If you receive a suspicious email, phone call, or message, hang up and contact the company directly using a verified phone number or website.
Sheriff’s detectives continue their investigation to try and recover the victim’s money in this case and search for additional victims.
