Cardinal Cupich blesses new campus at Cristo Rey
The Mass of the Holy Spirit is a tradition among Catholic schools in which the community gathers to thank God for the gifts of creation and salvation and to seek the guidance and wisdom of the Holy Spirit in the coming year. On Friday, Sept. 14, 2018, the Cristo Rey St. Martin (CRSM) community welcomed Cardinal Blase Cupich, Archbishop of Chicago, who led the celebration of the annual Mass of the Holy Spirit. This year the annual Mass held special meaning as Cardinal Cupich blessed the building at 3106 Belvidere Rd. which will serve as the school’s permanent home.
During Mass, Cardinal Cupich encouraged all students to “find the Holy Spirit” each day in the people who care for them at home, in friends and teachers at school, and even in the people who they may not know by name but who work tirelessly to make the school run efficiently every day, such as school administrators, benefactors, and co-workers in the school’s business partner community.
Following Mass, the school unveiled a beautiful bronze sculpture by artist Dora Natella (presently on faculty at Indiana University) of St. Martin de Porres, the school’s patron saint. The sculpture stands in the lobby of the school, greeting all who enter.
Preston Kendall, president of CRSM, had these words to say about the school’s decision to install a sculpture of St. Martin in this prominent place in the school, “St. Martin de Porres is a model of a selfless person for others who was rejected for being mixed-race but who persisted in loving others even in the face of hate. May the spirit of St. Martin be ever present here to remind us that love conquers hate and that we are all called to empty ourselves in service to others with humility and faith.”
Con-celebrating at the Mass were Bishop George Rassas, founder of Cristo Rey St. Martin, Fr. Mike Nacius of the Church of St. Mary in Lake Forest, Fr. John Milton, CSV and Deacon Tom Biegel of St. Gilbert Parish in Grayslake..
