Gurnee, IL. – When Woodland District 50 students return to the classroom this year, they will be the first students to experience new, smaller class sizes.
Starting with the 2018-2019 school year, Woodland class size goals are now 15 to 18 students per class for kindergarten; 18 to 21 students per class for first through third grades; and 21 to 24 students per class for fourth through eighth grades.
Kindergarten through sixth grade classrooms will be within the goal range for the first year. The current class size average is fewer than 25 per classroom at the seventh and eighth grades and will decrease to within the 21 to 24 goal range as younger children roll up to the Middle School.
The Board of Education approved the reduction in classroom sizes in order to foster positive relationships between teachers and students, provide more personal attention to students, improve academic achievement and ultimately measure that success.
“Smaller class sizes certainly add to the excitement of a new school year for staff and students at Woodland. Some research indicates reducing class sizes helps to create conditions for teachers to dedicate more individual time and support for students as well as give students more opportunities to share their experiences,” said Superintendent Dr. Joy A. Swoboda.
August 22 is the first day of school for first through eighth grade and August 23 is the first day for children in the Early Childhood, Woodland Early Learning Experience (WELE) and Kindergarten classes.

The first day of school will be a full day for students.
One of the largest elementary school districts in the state with approximately 5,700 students, Woodland School District 50 serves all of unincorporated Gages Lake and Wildwood and parts of Gurnee, Grayslake, Park City, Third Lake, Old Mill Creek, Wadsworth, Lindenhurst, and Waukegan.

There are four school buildings in District 50.
– Primary (Early Childhood, Woodland Early Learning Experience and Kindergarten)
– Elementary East (Grades 1-3)
– Elementary West (Grades 1-3)
– Intermediate (Grades 3-5)
– Middle (Grades 6-8)
