District 60 to Host Trauma Workshop March 5

Waukegan, IL. – Waukegan Public Schools will host a special interactive workshop exploring how Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) affect academic performance.
The event, titled: “When You Know Better, We Do Better,” will be led by Dr. Kevin Brown, the District’s K-8 Director of Teaching and Learning, and held on March 5. Dr. Brown will discuss his extensive research on the topic of childhood trauma, and how that trauma can negatively manifest itself as children grow into adults.
Common ACEs experienced by children include: various forms of abuse and neglect, violence, divorce, incarceration, fear, shame, and many more. These traumas or stressors, are proven to have an impact on a child’s behavior and ability to learn. During his presentation Dr. Brown will help attendees identify their own ACEs, as well as establish ways to assist students with the stressors be more successful.
The When You Know Better, We Do Better workshop will begin at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 5 at Lincoln Center, 1201 N. Sheridan Road. It is open to all students, staff, parents and community members.
